Subnautica 2 Hotfix 2 Improves Stability, AI, and Resource Balancing

Unknown Worlds has released Hotfix 2 for Subnautica 2, delivering the largest post-launch update since the game entered early access earlier this month. The update focuses heavily on crash fixes, AI improvements, resource balancing, and several controversial legal and privacy adjustments that quickly caught the attention of the community.

Subnautica 2 launched into worldwide early access on May 14, 2026 and has reportedly maintained massive momentum, averaging around 500,000 sales per day since release. After a smaller emergency patch on May 19, the development team followed up with a far more extensive update on May 22.

Hotfix 2 Targets Stability and Multiplayer Problems

One of the biggest priorities in Hotfix 2 was improving overall game stability. The patch resolves a multiplayer crash that could occur after connection loss, alongside another random late-game crash that players had been reporting since launch.

Performance improvements were also introduced for players running the game on Epic visual settings. While the game remains demanding on higher-end hardware, the update appears aimed at reducing stuttering and improving frame consistency during exploration-heavy sessions.

The developers also added a new telemetry notification that informs players they can disable data collection in the settings menu. For now, the message is only available in English, though additional translations are expected in the next update.

Resource Distribution Has Been Reworked

Hotfix 2 also adjusts resource availability across several regions of the game world.

Players exploring early-game zones will now encounter more Silver nodes, helping reduce progression bottlenecks during the opening hours. Meanwhile, late-game regions received additional Troilite deposits, making advanced crafting and progression slightly less restrictive.

The changes appear to be a direct response to player complaints about uneven material distribution and long farming sessions during progression.

Hammerhead AI No Longer Obsesses Over Tadpole Lights

Creature behavior also received attention in this update.

The Hammerhead species previously had an unusually strong attraction to the Tadpole submarine’s lighting system, causing them to endlessly follow players and crowd around underwater bases. Hotfix 2 tones this behavior down significantly, making exploration less frustrating and reducing unwanted creature buildup near player structures.

While relatively minor on paper, the AI adjustment addresses one of the most commonly shared complaints from early-access players during the first week after launch.

Major Tadpole Vehicle Bugs Fixed

The modular Tadpole submarine received several important fixes as part of the patch.

One issue occasionally caused players to suddenly teleport back to their base while piloting the vehicle, breaking immersion and creating serious risks during deep-sea exploration. Another bug allowed infinite oxygen after dying from hunger or thirst while inside the submarine.

Both problems have now been resolved, making long-distance underwater travel more stable and predictable.

Privacy Policy and TOS Changes Draw Attention

Outside of gameplay fixes, Hotfix 2 also revises several legal and community-facing policies tied to the game.

Players launching the updated version will be required to re-accept the updated Terms of Service. According to the revised policies, the previous clause preventing players from harming Krafton’s reputation has been removed. The update also removes an earlier requirement forcing fan-made videos to include a non-endorsement disclaimer tied to Krafton.

These changes follow community criticism surrounding the original wording and content-creation restrictions that appeared shortly after launch.

The developers have also published updated FAQ pages and Fan Content Creator Guidelines to provide additional clarification for players and creators moving forward.

Xbox Update Still Pending Certification

Hotfix 2 is already available on PC, while the Xbox version remains pending certification.

The development team has confirmed additional creature balancing and performance improvements are already in development. Based on the current rollout schedule, Hotfix 3 is expected to arrive sometime during the first half of June 2026 as Unknown Worlds continues refining the early-access experience.
