Pokemon TCG Live Adds Build and Battle Sealed Events With Chaos Rising Launch

Pokemon TCG Live is finally expanding beyond its traditional formats with the introduction of Build and Battle, a brand-new limited-style event mode inspired directly by the physical Pokemon Trading Card Game pre-release experience. The new feature arrives alongside the upcoming Chaos Rising expansion and marks one of the biggest gameplay additions the digital platform has received in quite some time.

For years, Pokemon TCG Live focused heavily on Standard play, Expanded casual matches, ranked ladders, and Trainer Trials. While those formats kept competitive players active, many fans continued asking for alternative game modes that could recreate the unpredictable and creative nature of sealed deck events seen in local card shops and tournament pre-releases. With Build and Battle, that request is finally becoming reality.

How Build and Battle Works

The new Build and Battle mode places players into a sealed-style environment where deckbuilding and adaptation become just as important as pure competitive skill.

Each run begins with players receiving a 40-card pre-built deck foundation alongside four booster packs from the currently featured expansion set. Players can then modify and improve their deck using cards pulled from those packs before jumping into matches against other participants.

Unlike the standard 60-card competitive format, Build and Battle focuses on smaller decks and limited resources, creating a much more unpredictable experience. Strong pulls from booster packs can drastically change strategies, while weaker pulls force players to creatively work around limitations.

Each event run lasts for up to five matches. Rewards are distributed at the end based on overall performance, including additional booster packs and Trainer Points.

Entry into the mode requires Event Tokens, which can be obtained in multiple ways:

Event Tokens and Free Runs

Pokemon TCG Live will distribute Event Tokens through several different methods, including:

  • The in-game shop
  • Promotional passcodes
  • Gifts and special rewards
  • Physical Pokemon Build and Battle Boxes

The good news for casual players is that every featured event will include at least one free run, ensuring players can try the new mode without spending additional resources.

The first Build and Battle event featuring Chaos Rising will run from May 21 at 5:00 P.M. UTC until June 4 at 5:00 P.M. UTC.

After Chaos Rising concludes, several rapid rotation events will immediately follow:

Upcoming Build and Battle Rotations

Destined Rivals

June 4 — June 6

Twilight Masquerade

June 6 — June 8

Perfect Order

June 8 — June 18

Perfect Order will additionally provide a new free run every single week during its event period.

The rotating structure appears designed to keep the format feeling fresh while encouraging players to continuously experiment with different deck styles and card pools.

Chaos Rising Introduces New Mega Pokemon

Chaos Rising itself is already shaping up to be one of the more talked-about Pokemon TCG sets in recent memory.

The expansion introduces several new Mega Pokemon cards, including:

  • Mega Greninja ex
  • Mega Floette ex

The set also heavily connects with Pokemon Legends: Z-A through the inclusion of Trainer cards featuring AZ, Emma, and Philippe, giving longtime Kalos fans additional reasons to pay attention to the expansion.

With Mega Evolutions continuing to generate excitement across both the games and trading card scene, Chaos Rising could end up becoming a highly popular set both physically and digitally.

Physical Inspiration Finally Reaches Pokemon TCG Live

One of the more interesting aspects of Build and Battle is how closely it mirrors real-world Pokemon pre-release events.

Physical Build and Battle Boxes traditionally include multiple themed mini decks that players expand using booster packs before competing locally. Previous sets already featured various deck themes, including:

Destined Rivals Themes

  • Misty
  • Ethan
  • Team Rocket variants

Twilight Masquerade Themes

  • Festival Lead
  • Froslass & Munkidori
  • Infernape
  • Tatsugiri

Perfect Order Themes

  • Serperior
  • Barbaracle
  • Tyrantrum
  • Doublade

By bringing that structure into Pokemon TCG Live, the developers are finally adding a mode that rewards experimentation rather than simply running perfected meta decks copied from online rankings.

For many players, that unpredictability may become one of the most refreshing additions the game has seen in years.
