Amazon has officially confirmed that its planned Lord of the Rings MMO has been canceled, putting an end to months of speculation surrounding the future of the project. While the game itself is no longer moving forward, the company says it still intends to continue working with the Middle-earth license in the future.
The canceled MMO was originally announced back in May 2023 and reportedly entered pre-production during late 2025. However, behind the scenes, the project appears to have struggled long before development could properly begin.
Layoffs Sparked Early Cancellation Rumors
Concerns about the future of the MMO intensified after Amazon carried out widespread layoffs in October 2025. Reports suggested around 14,000 employees across multiple divisions were affected, with Amazon Game Studios among the teams hit hardest.
Following those cuts, rumors quickly began circulating that the Lord of the Rings MMO had quietly been shut down internally. Despite months of speculation, Amazon did not publicly confirm the cancellation until now.
The confirmation reportedly surfaced after questions connected to an ongoing investigation surrounding Project Trident, leading to an official statement from Amazon Games leadership.
Amazon’s Head of Games, Jeff Grattis, stated that the company remains interested in the Middle-earth universe and is “working closely with Middle-earth” while exploring a different direction for the franchise in gaming.
Development Appears to Have Struggled From the Start
New reports surrounding the project paint a troubled picture of its development cycle. According to insider claims, the MMO was announced before a dedicated team had even been fully assembled.
For a significant period, the project allegedly only had “one or two” developers attached to it as a side initiative while Amazon focused resources elsewhere.
Things reportedly escalated shortly before the October 2025 layoffs, when more than 1,000 developers were reassigned from New World: Aeternum onto the Lord of the Rings project in an attempt to accelerate development.
However, after the restructuring and layoffs, remaining MMO-focused teams reportedly shifted their attention back toward maintaining existing live-service titles including New World: Aeternum, Throne and Liberty, and Lost Ark.
Amazon Still Wants a Middle-earth Game
Despite the MMO cancellation, Amazon has made it clear that it is not abandoning the Middle-earth franchise entirely.
The company says it is still interested in creating a “compelling new game experience” set within the Lord of the Rings universe, though no specific genre or gameplay direction has been revealed.
Industry speculation has already begun pointing toward alternative projects. Earlier this year, reports suggested that Crystal Dynamics could potentially be working on a new Middle-earth title. The studio is already collaborating with Amazon on the upcoming Tomb Raider project, fueling additional rumors about a possible partnership expansion.
For now, fans hoping for a large-scale online Lord of the Rings adventure will have to wait and see what direction Amazon ultimately chooses next.
