The Legend of Zelda Movie Release Moved Forward to April 2027

Nintendo has officially moved the release date of the upcoming live-action The Legend of Zelda movie forward, giving fans an earlier return to Hyrule than originally expected. According to an announcement shared by Shigeru Miyamoto on X on May 13, 2026, the film will now launch worldwide on April 30, 2027, instead of its previously scheduled May 7 release.

The decision was reportedly made due to strong progress during production, marking a rare moment for the Zelda franchise where a major project is arriving earlier instead of later.

Nintendo’s Cinematic Expansion Continues

The Zelda film is part of Nintendo’s growing push into Hollywood following the massive international success of its recent Mario film projects. After years of speculation and fan demand, Nintendo officially confirmed the live-action adaptation back in November 2023 in partnership with Sony Pictures.

The movie stars Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link and Bo Bragason as Princess Zelda. Since the reveal, excitement around the casting has continued to grow as fans wait to see Nintendo’s legendary fantasy world translated into live-action form for the first time on the big screen.

The production itself has gone through several scheduling changes already. The film was initially planned for March 26, 2027, before later shifting to May 7. This newest update now moves the release ahead by one week to April 30, 2027.

Large-Scale Production Inspired by Avatar and Lord of the Rings

The film is being directed by Wes Ball, known for the Maze Runner trilogy and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. The screenplay is being handled by Derek Connolly and T. S. Nowlin.

Wes Ball has previously described the project as something aiming for the scale and immersion of “the next big mo-cap Avatar-like movie,” suggesting Nintendo and Sony are treating the adaptation as a major blockbuster rather than a smaller experimental project.

Principal photography reportedly took place in New Zealand, a location famously associated with The Lord of the Rings trilogy. That production choice immediately fueled speculation that Nintendo wants the Zelda universe to feel grounded, cinematic, and visually massive in scope.

A Rare Moment for Zelda Fans

Longtime Zelda fans know delays are almost part of the franchise’s identity. Multiple major entries in the series were delayed throughout Nintendo’s history, often to ensure additional polish and quality.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time slipped from 1997 into 1998. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess was delayed from 2005 into 2006 while transitioning between console generations. The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword moved from 2010 into 2011.

More recently, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild famously shifted from its planned 2015 launch into 2017, while The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom also received additional development time despite reportedly being largely complete.

Because of that history, the Zelda movie moving forward instead of backward stands out as a major signal of confidence from Nintendo.

Confidence Appears to Be Growing

While many game-to-film adaptations have struggled over the years, Nintendo appears determined to carefully control its biggest franchises as they transition into cinema. The early release adjustment may only be one week, but for Zelda fans, it represents something unusual: Nintendo publicly signaling that production is ahead of schedule rather than behind it.

With the film now set for April 30, 2027, anticipation surrounding Nintendo’s live-action vision of Hyrule is only continuing to grow.
