Mixtape Climbs to the Top of OpenCritic’s 2026 Rankings

2026’s review charts have officially shifted as Mixtape has overtaken Pokopia to become the highest-rated game of the year on OpenCritic. The narrative adventure title launched on May 7 and quickly surged to the top with a Top Critic Average of 93, alongside a perfect 100% critic recommendation score.

The sudden rise pushed Pokopia down to second place after months of leading review discussions across the gaming industry. Despite losing the top spot, Pokopia still maintains an impressive Top Critic Average of 90, which also places it among the best-reviewed Pokémon-related releases ever recorded.

At the moment, Lost and Found Co. shares the same 90 average score as Pokopia, while Resident Evil Requiem currently sits just behind them with an 89 average.

Critics Praise Mixtape’s Emotional Storytelling

Developed by Beethoven and Dinosaur and published by Annapurna Interactive, Mixtape focuses heavily on narrative-driven gameplay and emotional storytelling rather than large-scale open-world mechanics or extended progression systems.

The game follows three friends reliving key memories during what appears to be their final shared night together. Through a collection of playable moments inspired by music and nostalgia, players experience scenes involving skateboarding, fireworks, photography, abandoned attractions, and first romances.

Reviewers have repeatedly highlighted the game’s presentation, soundtrack, pacing, and emotional impact as major strengths. Out of 33 critic reviews currently counted by OpenCritic, 15 awarded the game a perfect score, while another 12 reviews scored it at 9/10 or higher.

Only six reviews landed below that range, giving the title one of the strongest critical receptions seen so far in 2026.

A Short Runtime Didn’t Hurt Its Reception

One of the more surprising aspects of Mixtape’s success is that critics did not appear to penalize the game for its relatively short runtime.

Most players are reportedly able to finish the main experience in roughly three hours, with completionist runs only adding a few extra hours beyond that. In an industry where longer playtime is often associated with greater value, Mixtape instead earned praise for delivering a focused and polished experience without unnecessary filler.

That comparison has also fueled discussions between fans online, especially when compared to titles like Pokopia, which provide significantly larger gameplay loops and far longer progression systems.

For many reviewers, however, the quality of the storytelling and execution mattered more than overall length.

The 2026 Rankings Could Still Change

While Mixtape currently holds the highest-rated position on OpenCritic for 2026, the race is far from over. Several major releases are still expected later this year, including Grand Theft Auto VI, which many analysts expect to dominate both commercial sales and review discussions once it launches.

Additional reviews for current titles could also shift rankings over time, especially as smaller publications and late reviews continue to be added to aggregate scores.

For now though, Mixtape sits at the top of the critic charts and has quickly become one of 2026’s biggest surprise success stories.
