GTA Online May Finally Leave Last-Gen Consoles Behind

A new rumor circulating within the GTA community claims Rockstar Games could soon end major GTA Online support for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of the game. According to the report, the upcoming Summer 2026 update may become the final large-scale content expansion released for last-generation consoles.

While Rockstar Games has not officially confirmed the information, the rumor has already sparked heavy discussion among longtime GTA Online players. Many fans believe the move has been inevitable for years as the aging hardware continues struggling to keep up with newer updates and technical demands.

If the rumor proves accurate, future GTA Online content updates would reportedly focus entirely on newer hardware such as the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and eventually the PC ecosystem moving forward.

GTA Online Is Reaching A New Era

GTA Online originally launched back in 2013 alongside Grand Theft Auto V and has somehow continued evolving for more than a decade. Over the years, Rockstar expanded the online experience with businesses, heists, underground markets, roleplay-style activities, criminal empires, and countless seasonal events.

However, the technical gap between last-generation consoles and modern systems has become increasingly visible. Loading times, rendering issues, player synchronization problems, and overall performance limitations have continued affecting the PS4 and Xbox One versions of the game.

Rockstar already made a similar decision years ago when support for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of GTA Online eventually came to an end. Many players now believe the same transition is about to happen again as Rockstar prepares for the next chapter of the Grand Theft Auto franchise.

GTA 6 Could Be Accelerating The Decision

One of the biggest reasons behind the rumored decision may be the growing focus on Grand Theft Auto 6. Rockstar is expected to invest massive resources into the future of GTA Online once GTA 6 fully launches and expands its online infrastructure.

Supporting older systems at the same time could become increasingly difficult, especially if Rockstar wants to introduce larger multiplayer environments, improved physics systems, upgraded visuals, and more advanced online features.

Many fans already expected GTA Online’s last-generation support to end shortly after GTA 6’s arrival. The Summer 2026 update rumor now appears to align closely with those expectations.

Some Players Understand The Move — Others Are Frustrated

Community reactions have been mixed since the rumor started spreading online. Some players understand why Rockstar would eventually move away from older hardware after more than a decade of support. Others feel frustrated because millions of players still actively use PlayStation 4 and Xbox One systems daily.

The biggest concern for many users is whether Rockstar will continue allowing character transfers and progression migration between platforms if support officially ends. Rockstar has not commented on that situation yet.

For now, players should still treat the information as a rumor until Rockstar Games officially confirms its future plans for GTA Online and last-generation platforms.
