Call of Duty Moves On From Last-Gen Consoles

Activision has officially shut down recent rumors surrounding the next entry in the Call of Duty franchise—and for many players, the news won’t land well. According to a statement shared on social media, the upcoming title will not be released on last-generation consoles such as the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One.

This confirms a major shift for the long-running shooter series, signaling a full transition toward modern hardware.

End of an Era for PS4 and Xbox One Players

For over a decade, Call of Duty has remained one of the few major franchises consistently supporting older hardware. Since the early 2010s, both PS4 and Xbox One players have been able to access each annual release without needing to upgrade.

That era is now coming to an end. With the next entry skipping last-gen entirely, players still using older systems will be required to move to newer platforms like the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X/S, or switch to PC, in order to continue playing future titles.

What This Means for the 2026 Release

Rumors previously suggested that the 2026 Call of Duty could return to the Modern Warfare series, potentially under the name “Modern Warfare 4.” While the title itself remains unconfirmed, the expected release window still aligns with the franchise’s traditional late-year launch cycle.

However, Activision’s clarification removes one key piece of speculation: there will be no cross-generation release this time. The focus appears to be fully on current-gen performance, likely allowing for more advanced graphics, larger-scale gameplay systems, and fewer technical limitations tied to aging hardware.

A Necessary Shift or a Risky Move?

Dropping last-gen support is a logical step from a technical standpoint. Developers can now push the limits of newer systems without compromise, something that has often been restricted by the need to support older consoles.

At the same time, the decision risks leaving behind a portion of the player base that has not yet upgraded. Despite the availability of newer consoles, a significant number of players still actively use PS4 and Xbox One systems.

The Future of Call of Duty

With this announcement, Call of Duty officially enters a new phase. Whether the next title carries the Modern Warfare name or introduces something entirely new, one thing is now clear: the franchise is moving forward without looking back.

Players who want to stay part of that future will need to make the jump to current-generation hardware sooner rather than later.
