Pokémon GO Max Battle Day Brings Gigantamax Pikachu to the Game

March continues to be a busy month for Pokémon GO as Niantic prepares a major event centered around Max Battles. The upcoming Max Battle Day will introduce Gigantamax Pikachu to the mobile game for the first time, giving players a new six-star challenge to tackle during a limited event window.

The event arrives during an important year for the franchise. 2026 marks both the 30th anniversary of Pokémon and the 10th anniversary of Pokémon GO, and Niantic has been rolling out a steady stream of anniversary-related content to celebrate the milestone.

Recent events already included the All Out spawn event and a 30th Anniversary GO Pass, which rewarded dedicated players with a Mewtwo encounter upon completion. Max Battle Day now continues that momentum with new mechanics, bonuses, and a headline debut.

Gigantamax Pikachu Debuts in Max Battles

Max Battle Day is scheduled for March 28 from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM local time.

During this three-hour window, players will be able to encounter Gigantamax Pikachu in six-star Max Battles. These battles represent some of the most difficult cooperative encounters in the game, encouraging players to team up in order to defeat the powerful Dynamax and Gigantamax Pokémon.

Shiny encounters will also be available, giving collectors another incentive to participate.

Alongside Gigantamax Pikachu, all previously released Gigantamax forms will also return to Max Battles during the event, allowing players to fill in missing entries in their collections or hunt for better IV versions.

Event Bonuses and Gameplay Improvements

Niantic is also introducing several temporary bonuses designed to make Max Battles easier to participate in and more rewarding.

During Max Battle Day, players can expect the following changes:

  • The Max Particle collection cap increases to 1,600.
  • Power Spots refresh more frequently, providing more opportunities to encounter Gigantamax battles.
  • Power Spots will grant eight times the usual amount of Max Particles.
  • Players receive three special trades for the event day.
  • Walking will earn double Max Particles, while requiring only one-quarter of the normal walking distance.

These bonuses significantly reduce the grind normally required for Max Battle resources, making it easier for players to join multiple battles during the short event window.

Paid Timed Research and Max Mushroom Rewards

A $4.99 premium ticket will also be available for players who want additional rewards.

Purchasing the ticket unlocks Timed Research that grants:

  • 1 Max Mushroom
  • 25,000 XP
  • 6,400 Max Particles

Players who purchase the ticket will also receive double XP from Max Battles during the event.

How Max Mushrooms Work

Max Mushrooms are a temporary battle boost item designed specifically for Max Battles.

When activated, they double the damage dealt by Dynamax and Gigantamax Pokémon during the encounter. Multiple Mushrooms can be used to extend the duration of the effect, though they do not stack to increase the damage multiplier further.

At the moment, Niantic has not announced any free sources for Max Mushrooms outside of the paid research or store purchases, meaning access to the item will remain limited for many players.

Pokopia Celebration Event Leads Into Max Battle Day

Before Max Battle Day arrives, players will also see a lead-in event running from March 10 to March 16 called the Pokopia Celebration.

The event features several themed encounters and bonuses tied to the newly released Pokopia content:

  • Ditto appearances, including costumed variants that transform into Pokémon such as Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle, Pikachu, Sudowoodo, and Zorua.
  • Three-star raids featuring Lapras, Snorlax, and Dragonite.
  • Additional XP bonuses for spinning PokéStops.

This event acts as a buildup to the larger Max Battle Day celebration later in the month.

A Busy Anniversary Year for Pokémon GO

With both Pokémon and Pokémon GO celebrating major anniversaries in 2026, Niantic appears to be planning an extended year of special content.

Gigantamax Pikachu’s arrival in Max Battles is likely just one part of a larger roadmap of anniversary events, and the return of older Gigantamax forms during the same day suggests Niantic intends to make these mechanics more accessible to players who may have missed them previously.

For Pokémon GO players, March is shaping up to be one of the most event-packed months of the year.
