Electronic Arts has reportedly carried out layoffs across multiple teams working on the Battlefield franchise, affecting developers at several studios involved in the series. The move is described internally as a restructuring effort following a noticeable decline in player engagement for Battlefield 6.
While exact numbers have not been confirmed, reports indicate the layoffs impacted several Battlefield Studios teams, including Criterion, DICE, Ripple Effect, and Motive.
Layoffs Reported Across Battlefield Studios
According to reports, the cuts were part of what has been described internally as a “realignment” within Battlefield Studios. The layoffs reportedly affected multiple teams and offices tied to Battlefield development.
Despite the restructuring, none of the studios involved with the franchise are expected to close, and Battlefield development itself is not believed to be at risk.
Electronic Arts has not released an official statement addressing the layoffs or confirming the number of employees affected.
For the developers involved, the sudden job losses have reportedly come as a major shock. Industry observers say the layoffs were unexpected for both studio staff and the wider Battlefield community.
Battlefield 6’s Strong Launch Followed by Decline
The reported layoffs come after Battlefield 6 initially achieved strong commercial success.
The game became the best-selling title of 2025 and briefly overtook the Call of Duty franchise on sales charts. This marked a significant turnaround for the Battlefield brand after the difficult launch and reception of Battlefield 2042 in 2021.
At its peak in October, Battlefield 6 reached more than 747,000 concurrent players on Steam. However, player activity has steadily declined since then.
Current data suggests the game has lost roughly 89 percent of its peak player count, with daily peaks now averaging around 65,000 concurrent players.
While those numbers still represent a healthy player base for many multiplayer titles, the drop has raised concerns about long-term engagement.
Season 2 Delay and Content Criticism
Post-launch content has been another point of criticism among players.
Season 2 of Battlefield 6 was delayed by roughly one month, which created frustration among parts of the community already waiting for additional content updates.
When the season eventually launched, player numbers briefly rose again, peaking at around 92,000 concurrent Steam players. The increase proved temporary, with activity soon settling back to roughly 65,000 peak players.
Many players criticized the season for offering too little new content, arguing that the update did not provide enough to sustain player interest long term.
Competition From Rival Shooters
Another factor frequently cited by players is increased competition within the multiplayer shooter space.
The launch of ARC Raiders has attracted attention from players looking for new experiences, while Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 has continued to deliver consistent seasonal updates and live-service content.
Some Battlefield players have pointed out that the competing games offer more frequent updates and events, which has made Battlefield’s slower update cadence more noticeable.
What This Means for the Battlefield Franchise
Despite the layoffs, Battlefield remains one of Electronic Arts’ largest franchises and continues to generate significant revenue.
The reported restructuring suggests EA may be adjusting development priorities as it evaluates Battlefield 6’s long-term player retention and the future direction of the series.
For now, Battlefield Studios remains active across multiple teams, and ongoing updates for Battlefield 6 are expected to continue as the developers attempt to stabilize player engagement and restore momentum.
