A new report suggests that the PS5 Digital Edition could soon receive a downgrade in storage capacity across Europe. Instead of the current 1TB SSD, upcoming models may ship with only 825GB of storage space.
The change is reportedly scheduled to take effect on September 13, 2025, and while the internal capacity will shrink, the price of the console is not expected to change. This information comes from the well-known leaker Billbil-Kun, who has a strong track record of accurate industry reports.
PlayStation 5: The Best-Selling Console of the Generation
First released in November 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, the PlayStation 5 has quickly become the market leader. Earlier this year, Sony confirmed that more than 80 million PS5 consoles have been sold worldwide, spanning all versions — including the base model, PS5 Slim, and the more powerful PS5 Pro.
Despite strong sales, the console has faced rising prices across different regions. In April 2025, the PS5 Digital Edition increased from €449 to €499 in Europe, a price point that still stands today.
Why the Storage Downgrade Could Be Happening
Sony has recently adjusted pricing across global markets. In August, the company raised PS5 prices in the United States:
- Digital Edition: $449 → $499
- Standard Edition: $499 → $549
- PS5 Pro: $699 → $749
With costs climbing, reducing SSD capacity may be part of Sony’s strategy to maintain its European price point without applying another hike. While this avoids immediate backlash, buyers of the all-digital console will be left with less space to install modern games, many of which require over 100GB each.
Rising Costs Beyond Consoles
Sony’s price adjustments have not been limited to hardware. In June, the company raised PS4 and PS5 game prices in Brazil and Turkey. Following the change, titles in Brazil cost around 400 BRL (about $73 USD), while in Turkey they reached nearly 3,500 TRY (about $88 USD).
This trend reflects broader industry movement, with Microsoft raising Xbox hardware prices and Nintendo’s upcoming Switch 2 expected to carry a higher-than-anticipated launch cost.
A Bit of Good News: Astro Bot Controller Incoming
Not all recent announcements have been negative. Sony revealed that a limited-edition Astro Bot-themed DualSense controller will release on October 30, 2025. Inspired by the beloved platformer, the controller introduces unique design elements while retaining the features of the standard DualSense.
Pre-orders open on September 12, with pricing likely set at $80, matching the previous Astro Bot controller.
