Nintendo is preparing to pull the plug on Mario Kart Tour, bringing one of its longest-running mobile games to an end after almost seven years.
The mobile Mario Kart title will officially shut down on September 29, 2026 at 11:00 p.m. PT, with the closure falling on September 30 in some regions due to time zones.
Once the servers disappear, Mario Kart Tour will effectively disappear with them.
Nintendo Confirms Mario Kart Tour Shutdown
Nintendo confirmed that service for Mario Kart Tour will be discontinued in September. The company thanked players who have supported the game since its launch but provided little explanation for why the game is being retired.
Mario Kart Tour originally launched for Android and iOS on September 25, 2019. Unlike traditional Mario Kart games, Tour was designed specifically around smartphones and featured simplified touch controls.
The game also introduced rotating Tours, real-world-inspired locations, unlockable drivers, karts and gliders, alongside its controversial monetization systems.
However, its days are now officially numbered.
Nintendo has already started winding down several of the game’s paid services ahead of the closure.
Mario Kart Tour Will Become Unplayable
The biggest problem isn’t simply that Nintendo is ending active support.
Mario Kart Tour requires an internet connection to function. That means shutting down its online service also means players won’t simply be left with an unsupported game sitting on their phones.
They will lose access to the game itself.
There is currently no announced offline version that would preserve Mario Kart Tour after its servers close.
That once again raises an increasingly important question surrounding live-service games: what happens to the games people have spent years playing — and potentially spending money on — when the servers are switched off?
For Mario Kart Tour, the current answer appears painfully simple: it disappears.
Years of Content Could Effectively Be Lost
Mario Kart Tour grew substantially throughout its lifetime.
The game featured a huge collection of Mario characters, alternate costumes, vehicles and courses. Its rotating Tours regularly took players through locations inspired by cities around the world.
Several courses created or heavily featured in Tour eventually made their way into Mario Kart 8 Deluxe through the Booster Course Pass, giving some of the game’s content a life outside mobile.
However, that doesn’t preserve Mario Kart Tour itself.
The progression systems, menus, Tour structure, challenges, mobile gameplay and other elements that made the game unique could become inaccessible once Nintendo shuts down the servers.
It’s another example of why game preservation has become such a major discussion across the industry.
Mario Kart Tour Had Already Entered Maintenance Mode
The shutdown isn’t completely unexpected.
Nintendo stopped producing significant new content for Mario Kart Tour in 2023, after which the game largely began recycling previously released Tours and content.
That allowed the title to remain operational for several more years, but it also made clear that active development had largely ended.
Now Nintendo is taking the final step.
What started in September 2019 will end almost exactly seven years later.
Nintendo Is Slowly Moving Away From Some Mobile Games
Mario Kart Tour isn’t the first Nintendo mobile title to reach the end of the road.
Dr. Mario World was shut down in 2021, while Nintendo took a different approach with Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp.
Instead of allowing Pocket Camp to completely disappear, Nintendo released Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp Complete, a paid version designed to let players continue enjoying much of the game without relying on the original live-service model.
That makes Mario Kart Tour’s situation particularly disappointing.
Nintendo has already demonstrated that transitioning a mobile game away from its live-service infrastructure is possible.
There is currently no indication that Mario Kart Tour will receive similar treatment.
Seven Years of Mario Kart on Mobile Comes to an End
Mario Kart Tour was certainly a strange chapter in the history of the franchise.
Its mobile-focused controls, monetization and progression systems weren’t for everyone. However, it still introduced millions of smartphone players to a different version of Mario Kart and experimented with ideas that eventually influenced other entries in the series.
After seven years, that chapter is closing.

Unless Nintendo announces an offline or preservation-focused version before then, players have only a few weeks left to experience the game before it becomes another piece of gaming history locked behind dead servers.
