Sony Confirms $50 Price Hike for All PS5 Models in the US

PS5 and PS5 Pro Get More Expensive Starting August 21

Sony has announced that the price of PlayStation 5 consoles will increase across the United States starting tomorrow, August 21. The price hike affects the PS5 Digital Edition, the standard PS5, and the PS5 Pro, raising each model by $50.

PS5 Prices in the US After the Increase

  • PS5 Digital Edition: $499 (up from $449)
  • PS5 Standard Edition: $549 (up from $499)
  • PS5 Pro: $749 (up from $699)

The increase comes as Sony cites a “challenging economic environment,” echoing similar reasoning given for earlier hikes in Europe, the UK, Australia, and other major markets. Accessories for the PS5 remain unaffected by this round of changes, at least for now.

Why the PS5 Keeps Getting More Expensive

The PS5 originally launched in late 2020 for $500 (Standard) and $400 (Digital Edition). Unlike previous generations, the system has resisted the usual mid-lifecycle price drops. Instead, Sony has steadily increased prices in several regions.

Sony previously explained that the PS5’s chipset is “very difficult” to shrink in size, limiting opportunities for cost savings. Combined with global inflation, supply chain strains, and tariff pressures between the US and China — where most PS5 units are produced — the company has said higher prices are unavoidable.

Just last month, Sony raised PS5 prices in multiple territories, pointing to high inflation and fluctuating exchange rates. With the US being PlayStation’s strongest market, analysts suggest Sony delayed raising prices here as long as possible before implementing this increase.

Competition and Market Context

Sony isn’t alone in raising console prices. Microsoft increased the cost of Xbox consoles, accessories, and first-party games earlier this year, with new releases now priced at $80. The Xbox Series X currently retails for $600, meaning the PS5 Standard Edition will remain slightly cheaper despite the hike.

Still, with the PS5 Pro climbing to $749, Sony risks backlash from players already critical of premium hardware costs. As consumers weigh their options, the latest increases may reshape purchasing decisions for both current and next-gen consoles.
