Nintendo Switch 2 Firmware Update Resolves Carbon Engine Compatibility Issues

Nintendo has released firmware update 20.1.5 for the Switch 2, targeting and resolving a wave of backward compatibility issues affecting games built with the Carbon Engine. This engine, widely used by Limited Run Games to bring enhanced versions of retro titles to modern hardware, had faced problems on the new console — until now.

Following the update, 12 affected games — including Tomba: Special Edition, Shantae, and River City Girls Zero — now run properly on the Switch 2. Previously, these titles suffered from a range of technical issues, such as failure to load, visual glitches, and erratic performance.

However, the Gex Trilogy is still experiencing compatibility problems. A fix has been submitted but is delayed due to the Juneteenth holiday, and the game has been temporarily removed from the eShop until the patch clears testing and distribution.

Looking ahead, upcoming Carbon Engine releases like Bubsy in: The Purrfect Collection and Tomba 2 could face similar launch-day hiccups unless preemptive updates are applied.

While the firmware patch doesn’t solve every problem, it’s a major step toward stabilizing retro game support on the Switch 2.
