Sony may be preparing to make a major move in the gaming industry. According to recent reports, PlayStation is exploring the possibility of acquiring Warner Bros’ video game franchises—including Mortal Kombat, DC, and Harry Potter properties—as Warner Bros. Discovery restructures its media empire.
Warner Bros. Games Faces Internal Shake-Up
The potential acquisition comes amid a turbulent year for Warner Bros. Games. Several of the company’s major titles have underperformed, and multiple projects have been canceled. In response, Warner Bros. recently announced a leadership shake-up, splitting its intellectual property oversight between two key figures:
- Shaun Himmerick will now manage all games related to Mortal Kombat and DC.
- Yves Lachance will oversee Warner Bros. Games Montreal along with new games tied to the Harry Potter and Game of Thrones universes.
These changes align with Warner Bros. Discovery’s broader plan to split its operations into two separate entities—one for streaming and studios, and the other for news and networks.
Sony’s Strategic Opportunity
Insiders claim Sony may be interested in acquiring the WBD Streaming and Studios segment, which would include not just film and television assets, but also Warner Bros. Games’ most valuable franchises. While this remains unconfirmed, the move could dramatically shift the landscape of the gaming industry if completed.
Such a deal would give PlayStation potential control over a treasure trove of IPs, enabling them to greenlight sequels to Hogwarts Legacy, develop new entries in the Batman: Arkham series, and expand the Mortal Kombat and Injustice universes—all as PlayStation exclusives.
Competing With Microsoft’s Expanding Empire
If the acquisition goes through, Sony could significantly strengthen its first-party lineup—helping it compete with Microsoft’s aggressive expansion strategy, which has seen Xbox acquire major studios such as Bethesda and Activision Blizzard in recent years.
While nothing has been confirmed, the possibility of PlayStation absorbing Warner Bros’ game franchises would represent one of the biggest IP grabs in recent memory.
Will It Happen?
As of now, the deal remains speculative. But with Warner Bros. Discovery breaking itself apart and Sony always looking for ways to bolster its brand, it may only be a matter of time before one of gaming’s biggest franchises changes hands.
