PlayStation’s decision to phase out physical PS5 game discs by January 2028 continues to divide the gaming community. While many players remain concerned about digital ownership and game preservation, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot believes the transition is unlikely to have a major negative impact on the industry.
Ubisoft CEO Compares PlayStation to the PC Market
Speaking about PlayStation’s move toward an all-digital future, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot compared Sony’s strategy to what happened on PC years ago. According to Guillemot, the PC gaming market successfully shifted away from physical media without disrupting the industry.
He argued that the digital transition ultimately helped the PC gaming market grow by making game distribution easier and more accessible. Guillemot also suggested that removing disc drives from future PlayStation consoles could reduce manufacturing costs, potentially allowing Sony to offer more affordable hardware.
PlayStation Players Continue to Push Back
Despite Ubisoft’s confidence, many PlayStation fans remain strongly opposed to Sony’s plans. Social media platforms continue to fill with criticism from players who worry about losing access to physical game collections.
Many gamers argue that buying a digital game does not provide the same sense of ownership as purchasing a physical disc. Others fear that future delistings, server shutdowns, or licensing issues could eventually make purchased games unavailable.
Digital Ownership Remains a Major Concern
The debate extends beyond players. Former Blizzard president Mike Ybarra has called for a “digital promise” that would give consumers stronger ownership rights over digital purchases. He has suggested features that would allow players to resell or lend their digital games, bringing them closer to the flexibility offered by physical copies.
Meanwhile, an antitrust complaint filed in Mexico argues that removing physical media could strengthen the PlayStation Store’s market position while harming used-game retailers and consumers who have limited or unreliable internet access.
Sony Has Yet to Address Ownership Questions
Although Sony has confirmed its long-term digital direction, the company has not announced any major changes that address concerns about digital ownership or consumer protections. Reports also indicate that Sony is increasingly shifting its focus toward the development of the PlayStation 6.
For now, the success of PlayStation’s all-digital strategy will depend on whether consumers accept the change and whether regulators require additional safeguards for digital purchases.
What This Means for Gamers
The gaming industry has steadily embraced digital distribution over the past decade, but PlayStation’s planned removal of physical discs marks one of its biggest shifts yet. While Ubisoft believes the transition will benefit the industry, many players remain unconvinced.
Until stronger ownership protections are introduced, concerns surrounding digital libraries, game preservation, resale rights, and long-term access are likely to remain at the center of the discussion.
