Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is set to launch on October 23, but some players will be able to jump into the campaign a week earlier. Activision is once again offering early access to the single-player experience as a bonus for those who pre-order the digital versions of the game, while the multiplayer suite and the upgraded DMZ mode will become available alongside the full release.
For players who mainly enjoy the story, the early access period offers a chance to experience the campaign before the rest of the community begins exploring multiplayer and other online modes.
Campaign Available One Week Early
According to the current release schedule, Modern Warfare 4’s full launch is planned for October 23. However, players who purchase either the Standard Digital Edition or the more expensive Vault Edition will gain access to the campaign beginning October 16.
The multiplayer component, including Zombies and the revamped DMZ experience, will remain locked until the official release date. This means players interested exclusively in the story will be able to complete the campaign before the wider player base enters the competitive scene.
Campaign early access has become a familiar strategy for the franchise in recent years, giving fans a head start while also serving as an incentive for digital pre-orders.
Vault Edition Targets Cosmetic Collectors
Alongside the standard edition, Activision is offering a premium Vault Edition packed with additional content. These bonuses include weapon blueprints, exclusive Operator skins, and various cosmetic rewards.
While collectors and multiplayer enthusiasts may appreciate these extras, players interested primarily in the single-player experience may find little reason to spend the additional money. Since the campaign itself becomes available early through both digital editions, the premium package largely caters to those who want cosmetic customization rather than gameplay advantages.
A Korea-Focused Story
Modern Warfare 4’s campaign reportedly centers around tensions between North and South Korea. As with previous entries in the series, the story is expected to deliver large-scale action sequences and cinematic moments that have become a trademark of the franchise.
The series has long embraced blockbuster storytelling, and Modern Warfare 4 appears to continue that tradition with another globe-spanning conflict and larger-than-life military operations.
DMZ Receives Major Expansion
Perhaps the most interesting aspect of Modern Warfare 4 lies beyond the campaign. DMZ is reportedly receiving significant upgrades and could become one of the game’s biggest long-term attractions.
Rather than simply serving as an extraction mode, the new DMZ experience is described as a game within a game. Players can expect a mixture of free-roam exploration, Spec Ops-style objectives, PvPvE encounters, and story-driven missions that can be tackled cooperatively.
This approach could help address one of the biggest criticisms often aimed at Call of Duty campaigns: their relatively short length. Once players finish the main story, DMZ may provide an ongoing sandbox experience with persistent progression and replayability.
A Second Life Beyond the Campaign
Over the years, many Call of Duty campaigns have delivered memorable moments but limited replay value. By expanding DMZ into something closer to a persistent cooperative world, Modern Warfare 4 may offer players a reason to keep returning long after the credits roll.
The combination of traditional multiplayer and a larger PvPvE sandbox could give Modern Warfare 4 more longevity than previous entries, especially for players who enjoy cooperative gameplay and open-ended objectives.
Whether the revamped mode lives up to those expectations remains to be seen, but it is clear that Activision sees DMZ as more than just an additional playlist. For Modern Warfare 4, it could become one of the pillars supporting the game throughout its post-launch life.
