Bethesda Reassures Fans That The Elder Scrolls Online Isn’t Going Anywhere After Layoffs

Despite the recent layoffs at ZeniMax Online Studios, Bethesda has confirmed that The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) will continue to receive long-term support. The announcement comes after Microsoft’s restructuring resulted in nearly 400 job losses across ZeniMax and ZeniMax Online, leaving many players worried about the future of the long-running MMORPG.

Bethesda says those concerns are understandable, but fans shouldn’t expect ESO to disappear anytime soon.

Bethesda Says ESO Is Here to Stay

Game Director Nick Giacomini addressed the community directly, making it clear that The Elder Scrolls Online is “here to stay.” His statement was intended to reassure players that the development team remains committed to supporting the game for years to come, even after the recent staffing changes.

While the layoffs have affected development plans, Bethesda stressed that ESO’s future remains secure.

Some Major Updates Have Been Delayed

The restructuring has forced the studio to adjust its roadmap. Several of the game’s biggest planned features have now been pushed back into early 2027.

The delayed content includes:

  • Crimson Veldt Trial
  • Update 52
  • Class and Combat Refresh

According to Bethesda, the decision allows the remaining team to focus on quality rather than rushing large-scale updates with fewer developers.

ESO’s 2026 Content Roadmap Continues

Although some features have moved into next year, Bethesda confirmed that plenty of new content is still arriving throughout the rest of 2026.

Update 51 Launches in September

Update 51 arrives on September 28 and introduces several new additions, including:

  • The Nowhere Vault
  • The new Rumors system
  • Multiple quality-of-life improvements

The update aims to expand exploration while making everyday gameplay smoother for existing players.

Season 2 Brings Solo Dungeons

Season 2 launches on October 21 and adds two classic dungeons that can now be tackled solo:

  • Moon Hunter Keep
  • March of Sacrifices

The update gives players another way to experience dungeon content without requiring a full group.

Greymoor Becomes Free For Everyone

On November 9, Bethesda will make the Greymoor Chapter and Markarth DLC free for all ESO players.

The update also kicks off the Golden Pursuit event, which runs from November 9 through December 2. The event celebrates Skyrim-themed content while highlighting the Antiquities system, which will also become available to everyone.

More Events and Rewards Are Coming

Bethesda also confirmed several additional improvements and seasonal events for the remainder of the year.

Players can expect:

  • Expanded Tamriel Tome Challenges
  • Higher rollover caps for Tamriel Tome progress
  • New Frost Atronach crate rewards in the Gold Coast Bazaar
  • The return of the Witches Festival
  • The return of the New Life Festival

These updates are designed to keep the game active while the team continues work on larger features planned for 2027.

ESO Remains A Long-Term Priority

While the layoffs have slowed development, Bethesda insists this is a change in pace rather than a sign that support is ending. The studio is prioritizing stability and quality over releasing multiple major updates at once.

For ESO players, the message is simple: development continues, new content is still on the way throughout 2026, and Bethesda has no plans to abandon one of its longest-running online games.
