GreedFall 2 Goes Free-To-Play For The Weekend On Steam

Fans curious about GreedFall 2: The Dying World now have a chance to try the game without spending anything upfront. The RPG is currently available through a limited-time Steam Free Weekend event running until May 17 at 10am PT / 1pm ET.

This is not a permanent giveaway, meaning players will lose access once the event ends unless they purchase the game afterward. However, the event does provide enough time for players to explore the opening chapters, experience the combat systems, and decide whether the full release is worth adding to their library.

Alongside the free access period, the game is also discounted by 30% until May 27, reducing the price to around $35 depending on regional pricing.

A Difficult Launch For Spiders’ Final Project

The Free Weekend arrives during a difficult period for developer Spiders and publisher Nacon.

After launching in full earlier this year following an extended Early Access phase, GreedFall 2 struggled to maintain momentum among players. Despite interest surrounding the original game and its unique fantasy setting, the sequel failed to generate the same long-term attention.

Shortly afterward, reports confirmed that Spiders had been liquidated, effectively ending the studio behind several ambitious AA RPG projects over the years.

The closure marked the end of a developer known for creating story-driven RPGs with strong worldbuilding despite working with smaller budgets compared to major AAA studios.

The Legacy Spiders Leaves Behind

Before GreedFall 2, Spiders had developed several recognizable RPG titles, including GreedFall, Bound by Flame, The Technomancer, and Steelrising.

While none of these releases reached blockbuster status, the studio built a loyal following among players who enjoyed classic-style RPG experiences focused on companions, factions, lore, and player choice.

GreedFall 2 was meant to expand on that formula by acting as a prequel to the original game.

Returning To Teer Fradee Before The Original Story

Unlike the first GreedFall, which followed a diplomat arriving on Teer Fradee, the sequel shifts perspective entirely. Players take control of a native of the island who is forcibly taken to the Old Continent.

The story centers around surviving captivity, navigating political conflicts, and finding a way back home while uncovering deeper truths surrounding the Old Continent and its influence over Teer Fradee.

The game attempts to greatly expand the lore surrounding both civilizations while introducing new companions, factions, and larger-scale conflicts.

For long-time fans of the franchise, this deeper focus on worldbuilding has remained one of the strongest aspects of the sequel.

Mixed Reviews Continue To Divide Players

Reception to GreedFall 2 has remained mixed since release.

The game currently sits around a 63 Metascore on Metacritic while Steam user reviews remain close to 62% positive overall.

Many players praised the atmosphere, lore, dialogue, and the game’s ambition to recreate older CRPG-style experiences. However, criticism has consistently focused on combat flow, technical performance, pacing, and gameplay systems that some players felt lacked refinement.

Performance complaints in particular became a recurring issue during both Early Access and the final launch version.

Even so, some RPG fans continue to defend the game for attempting something different in an era increasingly dominated by live-service titles and simplified RPG mechanics.

A Risk-Free Way To Judge The Game Yourself

For players who were unsure about GreedFall 2 at launch, the Steam Free Weekend may be the best opportunity to finally see what the game offers firsthand.

Whether the title ultimately feels like a worthy successor to the original GreedFall will likely depend on how much value players place on lore-heavy storytelling and classic RPG structure over polished combat systems.

Regardless of opinion, the event also serves as a final spotlight on Spiders’ last major release before the studio’s closure.
