Xbox Backs Rockstar as GTA 6 Leak Investigation Intensifies

The ongoing Grand Theft Auto 6 leak situation is becoming increasingly serious, with Xbox now publicly backing Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive as efforts continue to identify those responsible for distributing alleged development material.

GTA 6 has suffered several major leaks throughout its development, ranging from gameplay footage to information allegedly taken from unfinished builds. With the game currently scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, Rockstar and Take-Two appear determined to prevent further material from spreading.

The investigation has now expanded beyond Rockstar itself, with Microsoft and Discord reportedly among the companies being approached for information.

Xbox Publicly Supports Rockstar and Take-Two

Microsoft has publicly confirmed that it is cooperating with Rockstar and Take-Two.

Xbox CTO Scott Van Vliet addressed the situation on Twitter, stating:

“We’re working closely with Take-Two and Rockstar Games to support efforts to protect creative works and intellectual property.”

Interestingly, Van Vliet did not specifically mention GTA 6 in his statement. He also avoided identifying any individual or group suspected of being responsible for the leaks.

However, the timing of the statement and Microsoft’s involvement in requests connected to the investigation make its relevance clear.

For Rockstar, having one of the world’s largest platform holders cooperating with the investigation could prove important as the company attempts to determine where the leaked material originated and how it has continued to circulate.

Take-Two Wants Information From Microsoft and Discord

Take-Two’s efforts go beyond simply issuing copyright takedowns against posts containing leaked GTA 6 material.

The publisher is reportedly pursuing information from Microsoft and Discord that could potentially help identify people involved in distributing the alleged leaks.

That represents a significant escalation.

Instead of merely trying to remove leaked videos, screenshots and other material after they appear online, the investigation appears focused on tracing the people and accounts responsible for spreading them.

Microsoft’s cooperation therefore puts Xbox directly alongside Rockstar and Take-Two in their efforts to protect the game before release.

GTA 6 Has Been Hit by Repeated Leaks

Unfortunately for Rockstar, this is far from the first time GTA 6 has appeared online before the studio was ready to show it.

The game’s development has been plagued by leaks, including the enormous 2022 incident that exposed unfinished development footage years before release.

More recently, additional alleged GTA 6 gameplay, map information and development material has circulated online.

As always, leaked material should be treated carefully. Development footage can originate from old builds, unfinished systems and abandoned features that may look completely different in the final game.

That makes leaks particularly damaging because players can end up judging a game based on content that was never intended for public viewing.

Protecting Developers Is Different From Hiding Criticism

There is also an important distinction between protecting consumers and deliberately stealing or distributing unfinished development material.

GamingHQ strongly supports game preservation, consumer ownership and greater transparency from publishers. Players should be able to criticize companies when games disappear, servers shut down or purchased content becomes inaccessible.

But leaking unfinished development material is a completely different issue.

Developers deserve the opportunity to finish their work before it is presented to millions of players. Artists, programmers, animators, designers and other employees can spend years working on projects such as GTA 6, only for unfinished material to suddenly appear online without their consent.

That does not help game preservation or consumer rights.

It simply exposes work that was never supposed to be public.

The GTA 6 Leak Investigation Is Getting Bigger

Microsoft’s involvement demonstrates how seriously the latest situation is being treated.

Platform holders have access to infrastructure, accounts and other information that can potentially become important when companies attempt to trace the distribution of confidential material. Discord could similarly hold account or server information relevant to an investigation, depending on where and how material was shared.

That does not automatically mean every person who reposted a GTA 6 screenshot is suddenly facing legal action.

The greater focus will likely be on identifying the original sources and people directly involved in obtaining or deliberately distributing confidential development material.

Rockstar Still Has Months to Protect GTA 6

GTA 6 remains scheduled for November 19, leaving Rockstar with several months in which additional leaks could potentially occur.

That makes preventing further unauthorized releases increasingly important.

Every major leak risks revealing missions, gameplay systems, locations or story details that Rockstar intended players to discover either through official marketing or by playing the game themselves.

With Microsoft now publicly supporting Rockstar and Take-Two, the companies behind GTA 6 clearly aren’t treating the situation as ordinary internet speculation.

The hunt for the source of the leaks appears to be moving into a much more serious phase.
