Call of Duty Shuts Down Standalone Zombies Rumor

Official Denial From Call of Duty

The official Call of Duty social media account has publicly dismissed recent claims that a standalone Zombies game is in development. Responding directly to speculation, the franchise labeled the circulating reports as the “rumor factory working overtime,” effectively shutting down talk of an imminent spin-off project.

The rumor suggested that Treyarch was developing a dedicated Zombies title intended to launch alongside the next-generation Xbox console. According to those claims, the project would release in parallel with the annual mainline Call of Duty installment and receive long-term updates similar to Warzone’s live-service model.

With this statement, Activision has made it clear that no standalone Zombies title is currently planned — at least not in the form described by recent leaks.

The Legacy of Zombies in Call of Duty

Zombies first appeared as “Nazi Zombies” in Call of Duty: World at War, initially introduced as a bonus mode. What began as a surprise extra quickly evolved into one of the franchise’s most beloved co-op experiences.

Over time, the mode expanded with deeper lore, complex Easter eggs, larger maps, and persistent progression systems. It became especially prominent in Treyarch-led titles such as the Black Ops series.

One of the strongest examples of Zombies’ enduring popularity remains Call of Duty: Black Ops III, particularly with its Zombie Chronicles expansion. That content pack remastered classic maps and demonstrated the commercial viability of nostalgia-driven Zombies experiences.

For many fans, Zombie Chronicles proved that a fully standalone Zombies experience could succeed as its own product.

Fan Appetite Remains Strong

Despite the denial, community reaction suggests that interest in a standalone Zombies title remains high.

Replies under the official post were filled with players expressing disappointment — not because the rumor was false, but because they genuinely wanted it to be true. Many pointed to the consistent engagement Zombies receives compared to traditional multiplayer and campaign modes.

In an era where live-service models dominate the market, a persistent, evolving Zombies platform updated annually could theoretically mirror the success of Warzone while catering to a dedicated PvE audience.

For now, however, that vision remains speculative.

Ongoing Franchise Leaks: 2026 and Beyond

While the standalone Zombies rumor has been denied, broader franchise leaks continue to circulate.

Reports suggest that 2026 may see a return to Modern Warfare under Infinity Ward, with a rumored Modern Warfare 4 entry. That title is said to feature multiplayer systems similar to Modern Warfare 2 and could potentially drop support for last-generation consoles like PS4 and Xbox One.

Further ahead, leaks indicate that 2027 may introduce a brand-new Call of Duty subseries led by Sledgehammer Games. Notably, that rumored entry would reportedly exclude a Zombies mode entirely — marking the first new subseries without Zombies since 2021’s Vanguard.

None of these reports have been officially confirmed, but the consistent pattern of insider leaks suggests long-term restructuring is underway within the franchise.

What This Means for Call of Duty

The official denial closes the door on an imminent standalone Zombies launch — particularly as a next-gen Xbox debut title.

However, the strength of community demand is unmistakable. Zombies remains one of Call of Duty’s most recognizable and replayable modes, with a loyal player base that consistently returns for new maps, storylines, and Easter eggs.

While Activision has poured resources into Warzone and traditional yearly releases, the conversation around a Zombies-only platform is unlikely to disappear.

For now, fans will have to wait — and continue watching the rumor mill.
