Build A Rocket Boy says it has uncovered what it believes to be a coordinated and paid campaign designed to harm both the studio and its debut title, MindsEye. Co-CEO Mark Gerhard reportedly told staff he has identified those responsible and intends to pursue criminal complaints tied to alleged espionage, sabotage, and interference.
The accusation arrives months after MindsEye launched in June 2025 across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC to a largely negative reception driven by technical instability, weak optimization, and disappointment around the overall experience. Refunds issued by Sony highlighted the scale of the launch backlash.
Allegations Point to External Funding and Influence
According to internal claims shared with staff, Gerhard believes roughly €1 million was spent on a smear effort connected to a major American company and coordinated through a UK-based organization identified as Ritual Network.
Reports indicate the studio was shown footage of an internal meeting in which Gerhard alleged payments were made to influencers, journalists, and even certain studio employees. Ritual Network has denied any involvement and says it is unaware of legal action.
Studio Response Focuses on Legal Action and Narrative Control
Gerhard is said to be preparing criminal complaints while also tightening internal security measures, including installing new cybersecurity software on employee systems. Communication around those measures reportedly caused internal friction, but leadership has framed the next 90 days as critical for the studio’s future.
At the same time, the company appears focused on regaining control of public perception. One proposal discussed internally involves weaving real-world names and events tied to the controversy into a future in-game spy mission. This idea surfaced after a previously planned crossover with Hitman was dropped.
Current Status of MindsEye
A February 4 update introduced a brand refresh and gameplay polish shaped by community feedback. While overall Steam reviews remain mixed, recent player sentiment has improved significantly, with the latest 30-day window showing very positive feedback based on recent user reviews.
Whether the studio’s legal claims move forward—or the improved reception continues—will likely determine the long-term fate of MindsEye and Build A Rocket Boy’s position in the industry.
