Riot Strengthens League of Legends MMO Team With Veteran WoW Producer

Riot Games has taken another visible step in rebuilding its long-awaited League of Legends MMO, with industry veteran Raymond Bartos officially joining the development team.

Bartos, a former producer on multiple World of Warcraft expansions, confirmed via social media that he is now working at Riot Games on the company’s still-unnamed MMO project set in the League of Legends universe.

While Riot has remained largely silent on the project’s current state, this new hire adds experienced leadership at a time when the MMO is attempting to regain stability following internal restructuring.

A Project With a Complicated Development History

The League of Legends MMO was first revealed in 2020, instantly becoming one of Riot’s most anticipated projects. Since then, development has been marked by limited public communication and several internal changes.

In 2024, Riot confirmed that the MMO had undergone a major internal reset, effectively re-evaluating the project’s direction. Since that announcement, no gameplay footage, system details, or release window have been shared.

Bartos joining now places his arrival firmly within Riot’s rebuilding phase.

Reuniting With Familiar MMO Talent

Raymond Bartos will be working alongside Orlando Salvatore, another former World of Warcraft developer who currently serves as engineering manager on the Riot MMO.

The two previously collaborated on multiple WoW expansions, bringing years of large-scale MMO development experience into Riot’s team. Their shared background covers live-service infrastructure, long-term content planning, and expansion-driven progression systems — all areas critical to sustaining a modern MMORPG.

This reunion suggests Riot is deliberately reinforcing the project with proven MMO specialists rather than experimenting with untested leadership.

What This Means for the League MMO

While Bartos’ hiring does not reveal anything concrete about gameplay or design, it does send a clear operational signal: the project remains active and staffed at a senior level.

Veterans from World of Warcraft bring experience in:

  • Persistent open-world systems
  • Long-term progression design
  • Endgame content planning
  • Live-service stability and iteration

These strengths could help address concerns raised after the 2024 reset, particularly regarding scope control and long-term sustainability.

Player Expectations Remain High

Among the community, speculation continues around how Riot might blend traditional MMORPG systems with League of Legends’ champion-focused identity.

Some players hope for open-world exploration and deep RPG progression, while others expect abilities, classes, or roles inspired by iconic champions. There is also ongoing discussion about whether the MMO could connect narratively to Arcane’s tone or timeline, though Riot has not confirmed any such link.

At this stage, all narrative and mechanical details remain unannounced.

Commitment Without Certainty

Bartos joining the team is a positive indicator for the MMO’s internal momentum, but it does not clarify how far along development truly is.

There is still no confirmed release window, no gameplay reveal, and no official breakdown of systems or progression. What it does show is that Riot continues to invest in experienced MMO leadership rather than quietly winding the project down.

What to Watch Going Forward

The clearest signs of progress will come from:

  • Additional senior developer hires
  • Official development updates from Riot
  • Early system or world design reveals

Until then, the League of Legends MMO remains one of the industry’s most closely watched — and most mysterious — upcoming projects.
