Hytale’s upcoming Update 2 is set to introduce one of the community’s most requested quality-of-life features: the ability to hide helmets and armor visually while keeping their gameplay stats intact.
The feature was confirmed by studio founder Simon Collins-Laflamme, who acknowledged the community request and emphasized that the system will be configurable at the server level rather than forced globally.
A Long-Requested Customization Feature
Since the introduction of wearable armor, many players have raised concerns about how gear visuals override character customization. Once armor is equipped, facial features, hairstyles, and cosmetic outfits become hidden, reducing the value of personalization and cosmetic progression.
This issue gained significant attention after a widely discussed community post highlighted how armor effectively erased player identity. The response reflected a shared frustration among players who want both meaningful progression and visual freedom.
How the System Will Work
Update 2 will allow players to toggle armor and helmet visibility while still benefiting from their defensive stats.
However, the feature will not be universal by default.
Server-Level Control
Server administrators will be able to decide how the feature behaves within their worlds, including:
- Allowing full cosmetic freedom
- Restricting hidden armor in PvP-focused environments
- Enforcing visible gear for cooperative or role-based servers
This approach ensures that servers relying on visual clarity for combat balance or teamwork can maintain their intended gameplay rules.
Balancing Style and Gameplay Clarity
The developers have previously explained that visible armor plays an important gameplay role. Gear appearance can communicate threat level, progression, and combat readiness at a glance.
Making the system configurable rather than global allows both sides of the community to coexist:
- Players who value immersion and character identity
- Servers that depend on visual information for balance
Moving Beyond Mod Reliance
Until now, players have relied on community-made mods to hide armor pieces. With Update 2, this functionality will become a native feature, reducing dependency on unofficial solutions and improving compatibility across servers.
The update represents a broader push toward flexibility and player choice while preserving gameplay integrity through optional restrictions.
As Hytale continues expanding its early access experience, Update 2 signals a stronger focus on customization, accessibility, and community-driven improvements.
