Mojang has revealed the first features planned for Minecraft’s 2026 update cycle, now available to test in the latest Java snapshot and Bedrock beta/preview builds. While still early in development, the upcoming game drop focuses on visual upgrades to baby mobs, refreshed animations for rabbits, and a long-requested quality-of-life change: craftable name tags.
As with previous snapshots, Mojang is actively gathering player feedback before locking in final designs.
Baby Farm Mobs Get Full Visual Overhauls
Eight baby farm mobs are being redesigned with unique textures and updated models, giving them clearer identities instead of simply being scaled-down versions of adults.
Mobs receiving new designs
- Wolf pups
- Kittens
- Piglets
- Calves
- Baby chickens
- Baby ocelots
- Lambs
- Baby rabbits
What’s changing
- One-pixel eyes for a more stylized, youthful look
- Multiple visual variants that match adult types
- Wolf pups now match all adult wolf variants
- Kittens match adult cat skins
- New sounds added for piglets, wolf pups, and kittens
- Subtle model tweaks to make each baby mob feel distinct instead of scaled
The goal is to make breeding and animal care feel more rewarding visually while keeping Minecraft’s familiar art style intact.
Rabbits Receive New Animations and Visual Updates
Adult rabbits are also getting a refresh with:
- Fluffier tails
- Updated textures
- New animations, including:
- Standing upright on hind legs
- Head-tilting reactions
These changes bring rabbits closer in line with newer mob animation standards introduced in recent updates.
Name Tags Are Finally Craftable
One of the most impactful gameplay changes in this snapshot is the introduction of craftable name tags.
How it works
- Crafted using paper + any metal nugget
- No longer limited to:
- Dungeon and structure loot
- Fishing rewards
- Librarian villager trades
Why this matters
This removes a long-standing frustration for players who want to name pets, organize farms, or manage mobs without relying on RNG or villager trading setups. It’s a small change with a big quality-of-life impact.
Where This Fits in Minecraft’s 2026 Roadmap
Mojang enters 2026 after an unusually busy year in 2025, which included:
- A theatrical Minecraft movie release in April
- Four major game drops:
- Spring to Life
- Chase the Skies
- The Copper Age
- Mounts of Mayhem
No official release window has been announced for the first 2026 drop yet. While the first drop of 2025 arrived in March, Mojang has not confirmed whether the same cadence will apply next year.
For now, these features remain experimental and may evolve based on community feedback.
What Players Should Expect Next
Since these features are still in snapshot and preview builds:
- Designs may change before release
- Some mobs may receive further tweaks
- Crafting recipes could be adjusted
- Additional features may be added before the final drop
Mojang continues to lean into its “game drop” model, delivering smaller but more frequent updates rather than massive once-a-year releases — and this early look at 2026 shows a clear focus on polish, charm, and practical improvements.
