Pokemon TCG: Munikis Zero — Mega Zygarde Spotlight

The Pokémon Trading Card Game’s renewed Mega Evolution era continues with Munikis Zero, a Japanese expansion that reinforces the return of Mega mechanics for the first time since 2016. This new phase draws clear inspiration from Pokémon Legends: Z-A, blending nostalgia with modern design choices that reshape both competitive play and card collectability.

A major shift introduced in this era is the replacement of traditional Hyper Rares with Mega Hyper Rare cards. These new chase cards feature significantly lower pull rates, signaling a stronger focus on rarity, long-term value, and high-impact centerpiece cards within each expansion.

Headline Card: Mega Zygarde ex

The defining card of Munikis Zero is Mega Zygarde ex, positioned as a true game-changing presence. Its attack design emphasizes both survivability and overwhelming offensive potential.

One attack reduces incoming damage, allowing Mega Zygarde ex to stay active longer against heavy hitters. Its secondary attack can scale to extreme damage values, reaching up to 900 damage under optimal conditions. This makes it capable of knocking out virtually any opposing Pokémon in a single strike, firmly establishing it as a build-defining card for Fighting-focused decks.

Other Notable Pokémon Cards

Munikis Zero includes several supporting Pokémon that enhance consistency and strengthen Fighting-type strategies:

  • Meowth ex provides valuable deck minimizing by allowing players to search for Supporter cards, improving setup reliability.
  • Binacle and Barbaracle act as new synergy pieces designed to support Fighting-type Energy acceleration and resource management.

These cards help reinforce the expansion’s broader emphasis on Fighting-type decks and sustained board presence.

Trainers, Stadiums, and Energy

The Trainer and Energy lineup further supports aggressive yet resilient gameplay:

  • Naveen (Supporter) resets the player’s hand, offering a high-risk, high-reward option for digging into key cards.
  • Tarragon (Supporter) recovers Fighting Pokémon and Energy from the discard pile, enabling longer matches and repeated pressure.
  • Lumiose City (Stadium) allows either player to place a Basic Pokémon from their deck onto the Bench, but immediately ends their turn as a trade-off.
  • New Special Fighting Energy cancels non-damage effects from an opponent’s attacks, significantly increasing the durability of Fighting-type Pokémon.

Release Timing and Positioning

Munikis Zero is scheduled to release in Japan on January 23 and is positioned as the fourth major Japanese expansion following Mega Dream ex. The global equivalent is currently expected to arrive in Western markets between late March and early April 2026.

Looking ahead, the early 2026 release slate also includes Ascended Heroes, an expansion that introduces new Mega Evolutions for Legends: Z-A starter Pokémon, brings back Stellar Tera and Trainer’s Pokémon mechanics, and debuts a brand-new Mega Attack Rare rarity.

Together, these releases signal a clear commitment to expanding the Mega Evolution era throughout 2026.
