Nintendo has shadow-dropped Wario World onto Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, making the GameCube classic playable again for the first time in more than two decades. The surprise release arrived alongside two additional Nintendo 64 platformers—Rayman 2: The Great Escape and Tonic Trouble—all launching on December 17 for subscribers.
A Forgotten 3D Gem Returns
Originally released in 2003, Wario World stands as the only fully 3D platformer starring Wario. The game follows his quest to reclaim treasure stolen by a malevolent, sentient jewel, sending players through compact, linear stages packed with enemies, puzzles, and hidden collectibles.
Wario’s signature brawler-style moveset defines the gameplay. Players can punch, grab, spin, slam, and even perform a full piledriver on enemies, blending platforming with light beat-’em-up mechanics.
Why the NSO Release Matters
At launch, Wario World earned praise for its tight, addictive mechanics but was frequently criticized for being too short and repetitive—concerns tied mostly to its original retail price.
Those criticisms carry far less weight today. As part of the Expansion Pack, the game now comes at no additional cost to subscribers, giving many players a low-risk opportunity to revisit or experience it for the first time.
GameCube Library Continues to Grow
Wario World is now the seventh GameCube title available through Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, joining:
- The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
- F-Zero GX
- SoulCalibur II (featuring Link)
- Super Mario Strikers
- Chibi-Robo!
- Luigi’s Mansion
These GameCube releases typically include modest graphical improvements, suspend-point support, and modern controller compatibility.
Subscription pricing remains:
- $49.99/year for an individual plan
- $79.99/year for a family plan
Outlook: Fans Want More
Nintendo continues to expand its retro catalog, but the pace of GameCube additions remains unpredictable. Fans are loudly requesting several major titles, including Twilight Princess, Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, Super Mario Sunshine, Pokémon Colosseum, and Super Smash Bros. Melee.
However, Nintendo has not committed to a release schedule, leaving room for more surprise drops like this one.
