2K Forms New Studio Led by Former Perfect Dark Leads After Microsoft Layoffs

Microsoft’s Mass Layoffs Spark Major Talent Shift

The fallout from Microsoft’s massive July layoffs — which saw around 9,000 employees lose their jobs — continues to reshape the gaming landscape. Among the cancelled projects was the long-awaited Perfect Dark reboot, developed primarily by The Initiative before the studio was shut down entirely. Co-developer Crystal Dynamics attempted to salvage the game by arranging a publishing deal with Take-Two, but negotiations failed after both companies refused to relinquish ownership of the franchise.

Yet despite the collapse of those talks, Take-Two still walked away with something significant: two of the reboot’s key figures.

A New 2K Studio Rises Under Gallagher and Horton

Bloomberg first reported — and later confirmed by both individuals — that Darrell Gallagher, former head of The Initiative, and Brian Horton, the reboot’s creative director, are now establishing a brand-new studio under the 2K Games label.

Gallagher announced his new role as SVP, Studio Head at 2K, stating he will be “building a new studio and leading an ambitious opportunity unlike anything [he has] taken on before.” He expressed excitement about working with 2K’s team and emphasised his long-held belief in what talented developers can achieve with a unified vision.

Prior to founding The Initiative in 2018, Gallagher held leadership roles across the industry, including positions at Activision, Square Enix, and Crystal Dynamics.

Horton, meanwhile, joins as Vice-President Head of Creative. His career spans an impressive list of studios, such as Crystal Dynamics, Insomniac Games, and Infinity Ward.

Will Their New Project Echo Perfect Dark?

While their upcoming 2K project will not be Perfect Dark, fans and industry watchers are eager to see whether concepts from the abandoned reboot carry over. Early previews of the cancelled game received glowing praise in 2024, making Microsoft’s abrupt termination of the project even harder for longtime supporters to accept.

If Gallagher and Horton were to build something spiritually similar under 2K — even without the license — it could fill the void left behind.

Microsoft’s Response Raises Eyebrows

Despite the sweeping cuts, Xbox boss Phil Spencer claimed shortly after the layoffs that Microsoft’s gaming division has “never looked stronger.” The statement drew sharp reactions across the industry, especially from those affected by the sudden studio closures and project cancellations.

As displaced talent begins to re-emerge across competitors like 2K, the long-term consequences of Microsoft’s restructuring are only just beginning to unfold.
