Jagex’s Proposal Sparks Controversy

RuneScape developer Jagex has announced plans to potentially remove Treasure Hunter (TH), microtransactions (MTX), and other long-standing systems from the game. While the move is still in the discussion and polling phase, it has already triggered a wave of community backlash, with many players voicing concern that the studio is dismantling integral parts of the RuneScape experience.

Treasure Hunter and MTX have been part of RuneScape’s economy for years. While controversial, they’ve also played a key role in player progression and funding future updates. Many fans fear that removing these systems entirely will disrupt the game’s balance and long-established identity.

GamingHQ: “A Bridge Too Far”

As long-time supporters of RuneScape and contributors to its community, GamingHQ is disappointed by the direction Jagex appears to be taking.

In response, we are taking the following actions:

  • Halting all new RuneScape guides and videos until further notice.
  • Revoking our bond giveaway event that was planned at the end of november… Sucks, as we poured in a lot of time in this.
  • Canceling our memberships as a form of protest.

“Even though the removal hasn’t happened yet, just putting these changes up for discussion is a bridge too far,” GamingHQ stated. “Treasure Hunter and MTX have been a part of RuneScape’s DNA for years. Stripping them away risks alienating the loyal player base that kept the game alive.”

Divided Player Reactions

The RuneScape community remains split. Some players support the potential removal, believing it could restore fairness to the game, while others argue that it erases key mechanics that have shaped RuneScape’s evolution over two decades.

With passionate opinions on both sides, Jagex now faces the difficult task of balancing player sentiment with its long-term vision for the game’s future.

A Call for Reconsideration

While the vote and discussions are still ongoing, GamingHQ urges Jagex to reconsider removing these systems entirely and instead focus on reworking or modernizing them rather than erasing them. Imagine they suddenly will come back with a battlepass system. They got to find their income somewhere.

RuneScape’s strength has always been its community and continuity. Taking away core features that have defined the game for so long could mark one of the most divisive moments in its history.
