Pokémon Legends: Z-A Brings Major Change to Mega Evolutions

Pokémon Legends: Z-A is shaping up to be one of the biggest releases of the year, and new details are shedding light on how the game will handle one of the franchise’s most popular mechanics — Mega Evolutions.

Return to Kalos with a Twist

Set to release on October 16, 2025, Pokémon Legends: Z-A takes players back to the bustling Lumiose City in the Kalos region, the setting of Pokémon X and Y. Mega Evolutions played a central role in those titles, and fans have long speculated that the mechanic would return for Z-A. The latest information confirms this, but with an important twist.

How Mega Evolutions Work in Z-A

According to new reports from demo sessions at the Pokémon World Championships 2025, Mega Evolutions in Pokémon Legends: Z-A won’t be limited to once per battle as they were in X and Y. Instead, players will be able to trigger Mega Evolutions multiple times in a single fight, adding a fresh layer of strategy to combat.

Activating a Mega Evolution is also different from past games. Rather than relying on a held item and one-time trigger, players can now click the right stick to initiate the transformation. This change streamlines the process and gives trainers more flexibility in battle.

Building on Legends: Arceus’ Foundation

Like its predecessor Pokémon Legends: Arceus, Z-A embraces a more open and dynamic style of gameplay while retaining classic Pokémon mechanics. The new take on Mega Evolutions is designed to complement the game’s evolving battle system, giving fans both nostalgia and innovation in one package.

With Pokémon Legends: Arceus still regarded as one of the most successful Pokémon games in recent memory, expectations for Z-A are sky-high. If these changes to Mega Evolutions are any indication, the game is looking to deliver both surprises and fan service when it launches later this year.
