Steam Update Adds Built-In Performance Monitor for Gamers

Steam has rolled out a new feature in its latest client update, introducing a built-in performance monitor aimed at helping gamers track their system’s performance in real-time. This integrated tool allows users to view important system metrics while gaming, including frames per second (FPS), CPU and GPU usage, RAM consumption, and even DLSS/FSR frame data where supported.

In-Game Overlay for Real-Time Feedback

The new monitor is accessible via a configurable toggle key and appears as an overlay on top of any running game. It gives users immediate feedback on how their hardware is performing without needing to rely on third-party tools or external software. The overlay’s position and visibility settings are fully customizable, letting players adjust how and where the information is displayed on their screen.

This move brings Steam closer in line with other platforms like NVIDIA GeForce Experience and AMD Radeon Software, both of which offer similar performance tracking tools.

Windows First, Broader Support Coming

At launch, the performance monitor is only available to users running Windows operating systems and using widely supported GPU hardware. However, Valve has confirmed that support for older GPUs and non-Windows platforms—including Linux and Steam Deck—is on the roadmap.

This staged rollout ensures that the feature runs smoothly on the most common hardware configurations before it’s expanded to a broader user base.

Positive Early Reception

Initial feedback from the community has been largely positive. Many users appreciate the convenience of a native solution for tracking performance, especially one that doesn’t require launching another application. For gamers troubleshooting performance issues or tweaking settings for optimal gameplay, having access to live performance metrics directly through Steam is a welcome improvement.

Valve’s continued focus on enhancing the Steam client with player-centric features highlights its ongoing commitment to improving the PC gaming experience. With more updates planned, Steam’s performance monitor is shaping up to be a valuable tool for gamers of all levels.
