After months in digital limbo, Rollerdrome is back. The fast-paced, trick-fueled third-person shooter is once again available for purchase across PlayStation, Xbox, and PC (via Steam) for $29.99. The re-release follows a sudden delisting in February 2024 that caught many by surprise—especially considering the game had sold over a million copies and received widespread critical acclaim.
Originally released in 2022, Rollerdrome blends the stylish mechanics of skating games with intense gunplay, offering a fresh take on the action-sports genre. The concept dates back to 2017, and it paid off: the game won a game award and quickly built a dedicated fanbase.
So why was it delisted in the first place? The shutdown of developer Roll7, combined with changes to its original publishing rights, left Rollerdrome without a clear path forward—until 2K stepped in to bring it back.
However, the return has sparked mixed emotions. While fans are relieved the game wasn’t lost forever, many are still angry about the circumstances that led to Roll7’s closure. Some frustrated players have taken to Steam to leave negative reviews or even promote piracy, citing comments from former developers who say none of the original team members are still profiting from the re-release.
Adding to the disappointment is the fact that Rollerdrome is no longer part of Xbox Game Pass. A small consolation exists in the form of a PlayStation Plus Premium Game Trial, though the session is limited to just 35 minutes—significantly less than the standard one-hour trial.
This relisting highlights a larger problem plaguing the industry: even successful, innovative studios are not safe. Roll7, also known for OlliOlli World, is just one of many creative teams lost in the recent wave of layoffs and closures. While Rollerdrome has been preserved, its story serves as a sobering reminder of the fragility of game development today.
For now, at least, Rollerdrome lives on—skating the fine line between celebration and cautionary tale.
