A familiar scam is making the rounds on Discord once again, targeting users with a clever trick involving the middle mouse button. Typically, when you click on a link or image in Discord, you’re met with a warning popup informing you that you’re about to visit an external website, which may not be safe. However, scammers have found a way to bypass this safeguard by encouraging users to middle-click on an image.
When you use the middle mouse button, this popup is skipped, allowing users to be redirected to potentially harmful websites without any warning. These sites can be loaded with malicious software such as keyloggers, IP visitor loggers, or even Remote Access Trojans (RATs), which can give hackers access to your system and personal data.
The scam is primarily spread through private direct messages, where users are asked to middle-click on an image or link. However, there have also been reports of bots spamming channels with these malicious requests, amplifying the threat.
To protect yourself, avoid clicking on suspicious images or links, and always be cautious when receiving unsolicited messages. If you’re unsure about a link, hover over it first or right-click to inspect its destination before interacting.
Stay safe and be vigilant as these old scams continue to resurface, putting your personal data and system security at risk.
