A decade after its sudden removal from mobile app stores, the viral sensation Flappy Bird is poised to make a grand return. In 2014, the game’s original creator, Dong Nguyen, unexpectedly pulled the game from the App Store and Google Play Store, despite its immense popularity and daily earnings reportedly in the tens of thousands of dollars. Nguyen later revealed his decision was driven by personal reasons, stating, “I can call Flappy Bird a success of mine. But it also ruins my simple life. So now I hate it.”
Now, fans of the game can rejoice as Flappy Bird is set for a revival, with an expanded version slated for launch by the end of October. This new release will be available across multiple platforms, including web browsers, with iOS and Android versions planned for 2025. However, this time around, Nguyen is not involved. Instead, a group known as ‘The Flappy Bird Foundation’ has taken the reins. Described as “a new team of passionate fans committed to sharing the game with the world,” the foundation is spearheading the comeback.
According to the group, they have officially acquired the Flappy Bird trademark from Gametech Holdings LLC, a U.S. company that appears to have taken ownership of the rights from Nguyen. The foundation has also secured the rights to the original character from Piou Piou vs. Cactus, the mobile game widely believed to have inspired Flappy Bird.
In addition to the classic gameplay, the team is planning significant updates, including new game modes, characters, and multiplayer challenges. Michael Roberts, the chief creative officer behind the game’s return, expressed his enthusiasm: “We are beyond excited to be bringing back Flappy Bird and delivering a fresh experience that will keep players engaged for years to come. We have big plans for our little Bird!”
With the promise of future updates and expanded features, Flappy Bird fans may find themselves once again obsessively tapping to guide the iconic bird through its challenging pixelated world.
