Star Fox Adventures Joins Nintendo Switch Online on Switch 2

Nintendo is continuing to expand its GameCube library on Nintendo Switch 2, and another classic has now joined the lineup. Star Fox Adventures is available through Nintendo Switch Online from September 9, 2026.

The surprise release gives subscribers another major GameCube title to revisit while also putting the Star Fox franchise back into the spotlight.

Star Fox Adventures Returns

Originally released for the Nintendo GameCube in 2002, Star Fox Adventures was developed by Rare and marked a significant departure from the traditional Star Fox formula.

Rather than focusing almost entirely on spacecraft combat, Star Fox Adventures places Fox McCloud in a third-person action-adventure game filled with exploration, puzzles, melee combat and collectible items.

There are still Arwing sections throughout the adventure, but they play a considerably smaller role than in traditional Star Fox games.

Players travel to Dinosaur Planet after receiving a distress signal and soon become involved in a mission to restore the planet by recovering the stolen Spellstones and Krazoa Spirits.

Fox is also joined by Prince Tricky, who assists with puzzles and exploration throughout the adventure.

Nintendo Keeps Expanding Its GameCube Catalog

The arrival of Star Fox Adventures continues Nintendo’s push to strengthen the GameCube Classics Catalog on Nintendo Switch 2.

Several recognizable GameCube releases have already been added, including Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness and Super Mario Sunshine.

Pokémon Colosseum has also been confirmed for the service, although it has not yet been added to the catalog.

Star Fox Adventures therefore becomes another significant addition for players interested in revisiting Nintendo’s GameCube generation without using original hardware.

One of the Most Different Star Fox Games

Star Fox Adventures has always occupied an unusual position within the franchise.

Its Zelda-inspired structure was dramatically different from the gameplay fans associated with Star Fox. Players spend much of their time exploring environments, solving puzzles, fighting enemies and searching for items rather than piloting an Arwing.

That change received a mixed response from some longtime Star Fox players, particularly those hoping for another space-combat-focused adventure.

However, the game itself received strong reviews when it launched.

Star Fox Adventures currently holds an 82 Metascore based on 39 critic reviews, with its visuals, environments and overall presentation receiving considerable praise.

Criticism was generally directed toward its limited Arwing sections, repetitive gameplay elements and portions of the voice acting.

Over the years, however, Star Fox Adventures has developed a reputation among some players as an underrated GameCube title.

Rare’s Final Nintendo Game

Star Fox Adventures also holds an important place in gaming history.

It became the final game developed by Rare for a Nintendo home console before Microsoft acquired the studio in 2002.

The project originally started life as Dinosaur Planet, a separate Nintendo 64 adventure that did not involve Star Fox.

During development, the project eventually evolved into Star Fox Adventures, with Fox McCloud and other elements from Nintendo’s franchise incorporated into the game.

That unusual development history remains one of the reasons Star Fox Adventures feels so different from almost every other entry in the series.

Star Fox Is Getting More Attention Again

The timing of the Nintendo Switch Online release is also interesting because Star Fox has recently received renewed attention.

Between Nintendo revisiting older Star Fox content and continued speculation surrounding the future of the franchise, Fox McCloud appears to be getting considerably more visibility again.

Whether that eventually results in an entirely new Star Fox game remains to be seen.

For now, Nintendo Switch 2 owners have another opportunity to experience one of the franchise’s strangest and most ambitious adventures.

Star Fox Adventures is available through the Nintendo Switch Online GameCube Classics Catalog from September 9, 2026.
