Final Fantasy XIV has received another major update, with Patch 7.56 officially launching on September 8. While the update does not introduce a new dungeon or trial, it brings several important additions to the MMORPG, including new Main Scenario Quests, the long-awaited Beastmaster limited job, major Savage changes, and the full launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 version.
More importantly, Patch 7.56 represents the final stretch of the current story before the upcoming Evercold expansion.
Final Main Scenario Quests Before Evercold
Patch 7.56 introduces four new Main Scenario Quests, beginning with the level 100 quest “A Winter’s Dream.”
These quests continue the current storyline while preparing players for the events of Evercold. They are also expected to be the final Main Scenario additions before the expansion arrives.
Unlike some previous story updates, Patch 7.56 does not include a new dungeon or trial. Players jumping into the update primarily for story progression should therefore expect a more narrative-focused conclusion to the current patch cycle.
More information about Evercold is expected during Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival in Tokyo, which takes place over Halloween weekend.
Beastmaster Finally Arrives in Final Fantasy XIV
The biggest gameplay addition in Patch 7.56 is undoubtedly Beastmaster, which joins Final Fantasy XIV as a new limited job.
Beastmaster is a melee DPS limited job that begins at level 1 and currently has a maximum level of 50.
Players must already have another combat job at level 50 before Beastmaster becomes available. Dawntrail must also be registered to the player’s account, meaning the job is unavailable through the Final Fantasy XIV Free Trial.
Beastmaster shares equipment with Monk and Samurai.
However, much like Blue Mage, Beastmaster operates under its own set of rules and restrictions rather than functioning as a traditional combat job.
Capturing Familiars Is Central to Beastmaster
Instead of simply learning abilities through normal leveling, Beastmaster revolves heavily around finding and befriending creatures known as familiars.
Players can use the job’s Gauge and Capture mechanics to build their collection of familiars, which are then documented through the Master’s Bestiary.
Kornago gourds can also be used to establish certain non-combat pacts.
Beastmaster additionally features TP, instinctual skills, unique HUD elements, and several mechanics specifically designed around managing familiars.
The result is a job that plays very differently from Final Fantasy XIV’s standard melee DPS options.
Beastmaster Comes With Major Restrictions
Its limited-job classification means Beastmaster cannot participate in every piece of Final Fantasy XIV content.
The job does not have access to standard role actions and cannot enter Duty Roulette. Several individual duties are also unavailable while playing as Beastmaster.
Retainers cannot be assigned Beastmaster as their job either.
These restrictions are designed around Beastmaster’s unusual progression and familiar systems, keeping it separate from Final Fantasy XIV’s conventional endgame job balance.
Crucible of the Unbroken Adds Solo Challenges
Patch 7.56 also introduces Crucible of the Unbroken, a special solo challenge designed around Beastmaster.
The mode uses a board-based progression system where players can obtain ephemeral and crucible items while improving their familiars and pursuing higher scores.
Rewards include remnants of resilience, while the ranked structure gives players another reason to continue developing their Beastmaster collection.
Season One of Crucible of the Unbroken begins on September 24 and will continue until the release of Patch 7.58.
For players interested in collecting creatures and optimizing their performance, this could become one of the more substantial pieces of side content introduced during the closing stages of the current expansion cycle.
Final Fantasy XIV Switch 2 Version Leaves Beta
Nintendo Switch 2 players also receive an important change with Patch 7.56.
The Final Fantasy XIV Switch 2 version has officially left beta, bringing the Nintendo version into its full release.
Switch 2 requires its own subscription. However, existing Final Fantasy XIV subscribers on another platform can receive a 50% discount on the Switch 2 subscription.
The update also makes several changes to world infrastructure. Multiple field instances have been added for Central Shroud, while the previous instance division in Tuliyollal has been removed.
Savage Restrictions Are Being Relaxed
Players working through the AAC Heavyweight Tier (Savage) should have an easier time obtaining rewards following Patch 7.56.
The update introduces guaranteed coffers and removes several weekly restrictions that previously limited progression.
An Echo buff has also been added, making the encounters more forgiving as Final Fantasy XIV moves further away from the tier’s original progression period.
These changes should make it significantly easier for players who missed the initial Savage progression window to catch up before Evercold.
Allagan Tomestone Cap Increased
The weekly cap for relevant Allagan tomestones has been increased to 900.
This gives players considerably more room to obtain equipment and prepare additional jobs without being as heavily restricted by the previous weekly limit.
With Evercold approaching, the increased cap should also help returning players bring their characters up to speed.
PvP Series 12 Begins
PvP players have another progression track to work through, as PvP Series 12 begins alongside Patch 7.56.
As usual, participating in PvP activities will allow players to increase their Series level and work toward the associated rewards.
Patch 7.56 additionally introduces various balance adjustments and system changes across the game.
Keybound Brawler Comes to the Gold Saucer in October
Not everything included with the Patch 7.56 cycle arrives immediately.
A new Gold Saucer minigame called Keybound Brawler is scheduled to become available on October 28.
The addition gives Gold Saucer regulars another activity to tackle while waiting for the next major expansion.
Plenty of Smaller Additions
Beyond the headline features, Patch 7.56 includes a large collection of smaller additions and improvements.
New items and housing furnishings have been introduced, while additional chapters are now available through New Game+. Square Enix has also deployed numerous bug fixes and documented several known issues that remain under investigation.
None of these individually carry the weight of Beastmaster or the new Main Scenario Quests, but together they make Patch 7.56 a fairly substantial systems update.
Final Fantasy XIV Is Now Preparing for Evercold
Patch 7.56 feels less like the beginning of another major content cycle and more like Final Fantasy XIV preparing its players for what comes next.
The four new Main Scenario Quests provide the final story bridge toward Evercold, while Beastmaster gives players an entirely new progression system to explore in the meantime.
Between Crucible of the Unbroken, relaxed Savage restrictions, PvP Series 12, the increased tomestone cap, and the full Switch 2 release, there is still plenty to keep players occupied.
Now attention will increasingly shift toward Evercold and the upcoming Tokyo Fan Festival, where Square Enix is expected to reveal much more about Final Fantasy XIV’s next major chapter.
