Modern Warfare 4 Developers Used YouTube Documentaries to Recreate North Korea

Creating realistic locations in video games is often a major challenge, especially when developers are attempting to recreate regions that are difficult to access. According to new comments from the development team behind Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, that challenge led them to rely on an unusual but practical source of information: YouTube documentaries.

During a recent interview, members of the campaign team explained how they approached the task of recreating North Korean environments for the game’s story mode, revealing that publicly available documentaries and reference material played an important role in the process.

Recreating a Country Few Can Access

Narrative Director Jeff Negus explained that the team faced significant obstacles when researching North Korea for Modern Warfare 4’s campaign.

Because direct access to the country is extremely limited, developers could not rely on traditional location scouting methods often used in game development. Instead, the team turned to a combination of consultants, research materials, and publicly available resources to build believable environments.

According to Negus, the studio relied heavily on expert consultants and extensive preliminary research throughout development. This allowed the team to gather information about the country’s architecture, culture, and living conditions while maintaining a realistic approach to the campaign’s setting.

YouTube Documentaries Helped Shape Environments

One of the most interesting details revealed during the discussion was the use of YouTube documentaries as a research tool.

The development team reportedly pieced together information from documentary footage available online, combining it with photographs of homes belonging to North Korean emigrants. These references helped artists and level designers better understand interior layouts, building styles, and everyday living spaces.

Rather than serving as the sole source of information, these documentaries acted as one part of a broader research effort that also included consultation with experts and additional reference materials.

Negus noted that one of the most difficult aspects of the project was making environments look believable while still fitting within the game’s artistic direction.

Creating realistic spaces proved particularly challenging due to the limited amount of firsthand material available. The team needed to carefully combine multiple sources of information to construct environments that felt authentic while supporting gameplay and storytelling requirements.

The comments provide a rare look behind the scenes at how large-scale military shooters are developed. Rather than relying on a single source, Infinity Ward appears to have combined consultant expertise, documentary footage, emigrant-sourced imagery, and internal artistic interpretation to create its version of North Korea.
