Final Fantasy 14 Coming to Switch 2 With Evercold Expansion Revealed

Square Enix has confirmed that Final Fantasy 14 is officially coming to Nintendo’s next-generation console, the Switch 2, alongside a brand-new expansion titled Evercold. The announcement was made during the 2026 Anaheim FanFest, giving players a clear look at both the future of the MMO and its expansion to new hardware.

Evercold Expansion Launches January 2027

The upcoming Evercold expansion is scheduled to release in January 2027 and will take players into the frozen region of the Fourth Reflection, a parallel shard of Etheirys. This icy setting introduces a fresh environment and new story direction that will push the game’s narrative forward.

Two new jobs will also be added as part of the expansion:

  • A new Tank Job
  • A new Ranged Physical DPS Job

More details about these additions are expected to be revealed at upcoming FanFest events in Berlin and Tokyo.

Switch 2 Beta Set for August 2026

A dedicated Switch 2 beta client will launch in August 2026, giving players a full month to test the game for free. Early hands-on impressions suggest the game runs smoothly in handheld mode, maintaining stable performance.

Cross-play and cross-progression will be supported, allowing players to continue their progress across all platforms without interruption.

Separate Subscription Model Introduced

After the beta ends, players who want to continue playing on Switch 2 will need to purchase the game client separately and register it to their account. In addition, a new subscription model applies specifically to the Switch 2 version.

This subscription is separate from existing PC, PlayStation, and Xbox subscriptions. However, players with an active account on another platform will receive a 50% discount on the Switch 2 fee.

With the base subscription starting at $14.99 per month, this results in an estimated additional cost of around $7.49 per month for existing players.

Platform Differences Remain

The Switch 2 version introduces some notable differences compared to other platforms:

  • No Nintendo Switch Online subscription is required
  • PlayStation access remains included within the main FF14 subscription
  • Xbox still requires Game Pass alongside the game’s subscription

Despite these differences, the main subscription continues to cover PC, PlayStation, and Xbox together, making the Switch 2 approach stand out.

Additional Updates and Content

Alongside the expansion news, the upcoming 7.5 content patch, titled “Trail to the Heavens,” is set to release on April 28. This update will act as a bridge leading into the Evercold expansion.

Separately, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is also confirmed to arrive on Switch 2 on June 3, 2026, further strengthening the platform’s lineup.

A Major Expansion With Important Trade-Offs

The arrival of Final Fantasy 14 on Switch 2 is a significant step forward for the game, bringing it to a broader audience and expanding its ecosystem. However, the introduction of a separate subscription model may be a point of concern for players already invested in other platforms.

With a beta arriving soon and a full expansion on the horizon, the coming months will be critical in shaping how players respond to this new version.
