Nintendo has expanded its retro library once again, bringing Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness to the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. The GameCube classic is now playable through the GameCube app on Switch 2, marking its official return after nearly two decades.
This addition makes it the ninth GameCube title available on the service, continuing Nintendo’s steady rollout of legacy titles for modern platforms.
A Long-Awaited Return for a Cult Classic
The inclusion of Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness was first hinted at during a Nintendo Direct in April 2025. Expectations were later narrowed to a March 2026 release window during Pokemon Day announcements, with the game quietly arriving shortly after.
It follows earlier GameCube additions such as Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, while broader Switch Online updates for Mario Day 2026 also introduced several classic Mario titles across other libraries.
What Makes Pokemon XD Stand Out
Originally released in August 2005, Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness is a turn-based RPG set in the Orre region and serves as a direct sequel to Pokemon Colosseum. Unlike traditional mainline entries, the game focuses heavily on capturing and purifying Shadow Pokemon—corrupted creatures that must be restored before they can be used effectively.
One of its most iconic elements is Shadow Lugia, a darker version of the legendary Pokemon that became a defining symbol of the game. The title also introduced new Pokemon such as Munchlax and Bonsly before their appearance in later generations.
Access Requirements and Limitations
To play Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness, players must subscribe to the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack and use a Switch 2 console, as the GameCube app is not available on the original Switch hardware.
While the re-release makes the game more accessible, it does come with notable limitations. Key features from the original version are missing, including connectivity with Game Boy Advance titles. This means players cannot transfer Pokemon between games, and the title is not compatible with Pokemon Home or other modern connectivity features.
Current GameCube Library on Switch Online
With this addition, the GameCube lineup on Switch Online continues to grow steadily. The current roster now includes a mix of first-party Nintendo titles and third-party classics, offering a broader look at the console’s legacy.
However, one major omission remains: Pokemon Colosseum. Despite being closely tied to Gale of Darkness, the game has yet to appear on the service, and Nintendo has not provided any timeline for its release.
What This Means for Switch Online
The arrival of Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness signals Nintendo’s continued commitment to expanding its retro offerings, particularly for the GameCube era. While the lack of original connectivity features may disappoint longtime fans, the ability to revisit the Orre region on modern hardware is still a significant win.
As the GameCube library grows, attention now shifts to what titles will follow—and whether missing fan favorites like Pokemon Colosseum will finally make the jump.
