Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness Arrives on Switch Online

Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness is now officially playable through the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack service. The title has been added to the GameCube app, becoming the ninth game available in the current lineup.

Access requires an active Expansion Pack subscription and the updated GameCube app on the Switch 2 console.

Release Timeline and Context

The addition follows a previously confirmed rollout plan. The GameCube app itself was first introduced during an April 2025 Nintendo Direct, with Pokémon XD later confirmed for release during Pokémon Day 2026.

Nintendo narrowed the release window to March, and the game has now been added shortly after that confirmation.

The last GameCube title added before this was Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance in January 2026, showing a steady expansion of the retro library.

What Pokémon XD Brings Back

Originally released in August 2005, Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness is a turn-based RPG set in the Orre region and serves as a sequel to Pokémon Colosseum.

The game focuses on capturing and purifying Shadow Pokémon, with Shadow Lugia being one of its most recognizable features. It also introduced Pokémon such as Munchlax and Bonsly.

Unlike traditional Pokémon titles, the game leans heavily into its darker tone and structured progression, making it stand out within the franchise.

Access Requirements and Limitations

Players need the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription to access the GameCube library. The total cost sits at $50 per year.

There are several limitations compared to the original release:

  • The GameCube app is exclusive to Switch 2
  • No GameCube–GBA link functionality
  • No Pokémon Home support
  • No transfers to Game Boy Advance titles
  • No compatibility with FireRed or LeafGreen integrations

This means the game is presented as a standalone experience without cross-platform features.

Current GameCube Lineup

With this addition, the GameCube catalog now includes:

  • Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness
  • Chibi-Robo!
  • Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
  • F-Zero GX
  • Luigi’s Mansion
  • SoulCalibur II
  • Super Mario Strikers
  • The Wind Waker
  • Wario World

Nintendo continues to expand the library gradually, often aligning releases with themed events or announcements.

Pokémon Colosseum Still Missing

One notable absence remains: Pokémon Colosseum.

Despite being the direct predecessor to Pokémon XD, it has not yet been added to the GameCube app, and Nintendo has not shared any timeline for its release.

Final Overview

The arrival of Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness adds another fan-favorite to the Switch Online GameCube lineup and gives players access to one of the franchise’s more unique entries.

While missing features limit its integration with modern systems, the core experience remains intact, offering a nostalgic return to the Orre region.
