Handheld gaming devices continue to evolve rapidly, and one of the newest developments involves the introduction of AI-powered upscaling technology for the ROG Xbox Ally. A new update scheduled for April 2026 will bring Microsoft’s Auto Super Resolution system to the device, promising noticeable performance improvements for many modern games.
Auto Super Resolution is designed to use artificial intelligence to upscale lower-resolution images in real time, allowing games to run more smoothly while still maintaining sharp visuals on screen.

Performance Improvements Already Demonstrated
Initial demonstrations of the technology suggest performance improvements of up to 30 percent in certain scenarios. In one example shown during testing, a demanding open-world racing title saw performance increase from around 35 frames per second to roughly 51 frames per second when Auto Super Resolution was enabled.
The technology works by rendering games internally at a lower resolution and then using AI models to reconstruct a higher-quality image before displaying it on screen. The result is smoother gameplay without the heavy performance cost normally associated with high-resolution rendering.
This approach mirrors technologies already used on PC hardware, such as AI-based upscaling techniques that help games achieve higher frame rates without sacrificing visual quality.

The ROG Xbox Ally hardware includes a Ryzen processor equipped with a dedicated neural processing unit. This NPU is capable of handling AI workloads independently from the main CPU and GPU, allowing the system to apply upscaling without significantly affecting other aspects of performance.
Auto Super Resolution is expected to support many games that use DirectX 11 and DirectX 12, which covers a large portion of modern PC game releases.
Because the technology works at the system level rather than being integrated into individual games, many titles could benefit automatically without developers needing to release special patches.
