Arrowhead Game Studios has confirmed a major change coming to the PC version of Helldivers 2. Starting March 17, the current 154 GB PC client will be replaced by a dramatically smaller build known as “prod_slim,” reducing the total installation size to just 23 GB.
The change represents one of the most significant storage optimizations seen in a modern live-service title and should make the game far easier to install and maintain for players with limited storage space.
Legacy Client Being Removed From Steam
The current “legacy” PC client will be removed from Steam’s storefront when the new build goes live on March 17. From that point onward, the slimmed-down version will become the standard download for all PC players.
The new client aligns the PC version much more closely with the console versions of the game. The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S ports currently sit at roughly 25 GB, meaning PC players will finally have similar storage requirements.
Why Arrowhead Decided to Reduce the File Size
The decision follows several weeks of testing and player feedback gathered during February’s Machinery of Oppression update, which introduced the Cyberstan campaign.
During this period, Arrowhead allowed players to experiment with the new “prod_slim” build and provided the studio with performance data. According to the developers, the results showed minimal differences in load times between the legacy and slim clients.
Because the performance impact was negligible while the storage savings were massive, the studio determined that the new build offered a better overall experience for the community.
Players Can Already Switch to the Slim Client
Players who want to reduce their install size before the official switch can already opt into the slimmer version through Steam.
To do this, players can open the game’s properties in Steam, navigate to the Game Versions and Betas section, and select the “prod_slim” build. Once selected, the new 23 GB version will begin downloading.
Installation times will vary depending on connection speed. While Arrowhead recommends installing the game on an SSD for the best experience, traditional HDDs are still supported.
Additional Notes and Community Rewards
Arrowhead also thanked players for helping test the new client build and contributing valuable feedback during the testing phase.
The studio has not yet revealed the full details of the March 17 patch that will accompany the transition to the slim client. More information is expected closer to release.
In the meantime, players who logged in during February’s campaign received a cosmetic reward earlier this month. On March 2, participants were granted the Eye of Liberty cape, a golden recolor of the 2025 Eye of Freedom cape.
A Welcome Change for PC Players
The reduced installation size may come at an ideal time for many players. With RAM and SSD prices still fluctuating, storage efficiency has become an increasingly important factor for modern games.
By cutting the install size by more than 80 percent, Helldivers 2 could become significantly more accessible for players who previously struggled with the game’s massive storage requirement.
