Overwatch Season 1 Relaunch Adds Double XP Weekend and Free Loot Boxes

Blizzard has officially soft-relaunched Overwatch in 2026, dropping the “2” branding and introducing a reworked seasonal structure. The refreshed version kicks off with a celebratory Double Match XP weekend and free Loot Boxes for all players, marking a strong start for Season 1.

The relaunch has already delivered record player counts on Steam and a noticeable surge across streaming platforms, signaling renewed interest in the hero shooter.

A New Era for Overwatch

Season 1 is more than just a content update. Blizzard has rolled out:

  • Year-long seasonal storylines
  • A refreshed user interface
  • New subroles for heroes
  • 10 new heroes planned, with five launching in Season 1

The scale of the update positions 2026 as a full reset moment for the franchise rather than a standard seasonal refresh.

Double Match XP Weekend Details

To celebrate the relaunch, Blizzard activated a Double Match XP event running:

February 20 at 11:00 AM PT through February 23 at 11:00 AM PT (expected)

During this window:

  • All players receive Double Battle Pass XP from matches
  • Five free Loot Boxes are granted simply by logging in
  • Loot Boxes appear via an on-screen popup and can be opened from inventory

How the XP Boost Works

The Double Match XP affects baseline Battle Pass XP earned per match, which normally ranges between roughly 700–1,000 XP depending on the result.

With the boost active:

  • Baseline XP is doubled
  • Group play adds an additional +20% bonus
  • In-demand role bonuses (typically 100–500 XP) also scale with the double boost

This means a single match can exceed 2,000 Battle Pass XP under optimal conditions.

However, it’s important to note:

  • The boost does not apply to daily, weekly, or event challenge XP
  • Hero progression level XP is also unaffected

The event strictly targets match-earned Battle Pass progression.

More Free Loot Boxes Through Events and Twitch Drops

The free rewards don’t stop at the login bonus.

Reign of Talon: Conquest Twitch Drops

The ongoing Twitch campaign tied to Reign of Talon Season 1: Conquest runs until:

March 8 at 11:59 PM PT

By watching streams:

  • 13 hours of viewing unlocks 10 Loot Boxes
  • Two of those Loot Boxes are Legendary

Conquest Event Rewards

The in-game Conquest event also offers significant rewards:

  • Approximately 100 Loot Boxes available across weekly Battle Pass progressions
  • Players can switch teams or remain loyal to pursue different cosmetics

Between Twitch Drops, event rewards, and login bonuses, new and returning players can quickly accumulate 20–30 Loot Boxes without spending currency.

Immediate Impact and Player Response

Blizzard has also addressed reward-system inconsistencies early in the relaunch. Players who completed at least one event challenge have already received:

  • Loot Boxes
  • Prestige Pass cosmetics

This early goodwill gesture, combined with the XP boost and free rewards, has helped maintain momentum following the Steam player surge.

A Strong Start for 2026

The Overwatch Season 1 relaunch appears to be landing exactly as Blizzard intended: high visibility, strong engagement, and meaningful progression incentives.

With structured year-long storytelling, multiple free reward avenues, and accelerated Battle Pass leveling, Season 1 sets the tone for what Blizzard hopes will be a sustained revival of the franchise.
