Roblox has introduced one of its most controversial platform changes to date: chat is now locked behind mandatory age verification. The update applies globally and affects all major communication features, including text chat, voice chat, and party systems.
While Roblox positions the change as a major step toward improving child safety, many players see it as an overreach that raises serious concerns about privacy, accessibility, and digital surveillance.
What Changed: Chat Now Requires Age Verification
Under the new system, users must complete an age check before gaining access to any form of chat on Roblox.
This process relies on facial age estimation technology using a device camera. The system determines which age group a player belongs to and applies communication restrictions based on that result.
According to Roblox, the scan is only used to estimate age and is deleted immediately after processing. However, for many players, the idea of being required to use a camera just to communicate in a game feels like a step too far.
If the system estimates a user’s age incorrectly, Roblox allows an appeal process or the option to verify using official identification instead. This means you will have to yet again provide them with your information that they will store for later use. They dont say they keep that information, but i can guarantee you, that they will. Same thing happen with discord and see how that went.
Stricter Rules for Younger Players
For younger users, the new system introduces even tighter controls.
Children now require parental consent to enable chat features at all. Even then, communication is heavily restricted to prevent interaction with adults outside approved age groups.
Roblox says this is meant to reduce grooming, harassment, and inappropriate contact — problems the platform has faced ongoing criticism for over the years.
Why Roblox Is Doing This
The company frames the update as part of a broader effort to become the safest large-scale online gaming platform for minors.
By limiting who can talk to whom and verifying ages more aggressively, Roblox aims to:
