Rockstar Games has surprised its Red Dead Redemption 2 community with an unexpected content update for Red Dead Online this July — marking the first substantial addition to the live-service western in three years. The update, titled Strange Tales of the West, introduces new supernatural missions and fresh challenges, sparking renewed speculation about the future of the franchise.
A Return After Three Years of Silence
Following its 2018 launch, Red Dead Online saw regular updates and seasonal events through mid-2022, when Rockstar announced it was winding down development to shift more resources toward Grand Theft Auto 6. At the time, the studio stated that no further “major” updates were planned, leaving players skeptical about the game’s long-term prospects.
However, on July 1, 2025, Rockstar quietly rolled out Strange Tales of the West, offering players four brand-new Telegram missions and a limited-time event featuring unique challenges and rewards — all available at no cost. The update caught much of the community off guard, fueling excitement and theories that Rockstar may have more in store for Red Dead Redemption 2 and its online component.
Strange Tales of the West: Zombies Return to Armadillo
The highlight of the update is a mission called Strange Tales of the Plague, which sends players into a version of Armadillo overrun by the undead. The mission’s eerie atmosphere and zombie-infested setting serve as a clear homage to Undead Nightmare, the beloved 2010 expansion for the original Red Dead Redemption.
The new missions are framed as supernatural investigations, commissioned by author Theodore Levin, who is fascinated by tales of the unexplained. The update has already prompted calls among fans for an Undead Nightmare 2, though a full expansion of that scale seems unlikely at this stage in the game’s life.
Hints of More to Come
Perhaps the most intriguing detail lies in the official title of the update: Strange Tales of the West Volume 1. This phrasing strongly suggests that additional installments may follow. Rockstar has not shared a timeline for a possible “Volume 2,” but the naming convention indicates a new series of content drops could be in the works.
The surprise timing of the update has also reignited discussion about the rumored next-gen patch for Red Dead Redemption 2 and Red Dead Online. Industry chatter in recent months has pointed to Rockstar preparing an upgrade for current-generation consoles and PC, which could potentially arrive later in 2025.
Looking Ahead
Rockstar’s renewed attention to Red Dead Online has been warmly received by players, many of whom had assumed the game was effectively sunset. With Grand Theft Auto 6 still commanding the bulk of the studio’s resources, it remains to be seen how much more Red Dead content fans can realistically expect — but for now, Strange Tales of the West offers a welcome reason to saddle up again.
