Skype Is Dead, but Your Credit Still Works – Here’s What Microsoft Says

Following the official shutdown of Skype on May 5, 2025, many long-time users have been left wondering what happens to their remaining Skype Credit or active subscriptions. Microsoft has now clarified the situation—and there’s good news for those with leftover balances.

According to the company, existing Skype Credit and subscriptions will remain usable, even though the core Skype app is no longer operational. Users can continue to make calls using their remaining credit through the Skype web portal or by signing into Microsoft Teams Free, which now serves as Skype’s successor.

However, Microsoft has confirmed that purchasing new credit or subscriptions is no longer possible as of April 3, 2025. Automatic top-ups have also been disabled. This means users can only use what they already had prior to the shutdown.

Those who choose not to migrate to Teams still have the option to export their Skype chat history, contacts, and data until early 2026.

Quick Recap:

  • Skype shut down on May 5, 2025.
  • Existing Skype Credit and subscriptions still work via Skype web or Teams Free.
  • No new credit can be bought; top-ups are disabled.
  • Users have until early 2026 to export their data.

The final chapter of Skype may be written, but its remaining users won’t lose the money they invested—at least, not yet.
