Zelda’s Switch 2 Upgrade Confirmed: Better Frame Rates, 4K Resolution, and Free for Some Players

Nintendo has officially confirmed that both The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom will receive enhanced editions for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. Revealed during the April 2 Nintendo Direct, these “Switch 2 Edition” upgrades aim to significantly boost performance—most notably offering up to 4K resolution and 60 FPS in Docked Mode.

In a recent interview, a Nintendo executive stated that Tears of the Kingdom in particular will run much smoother on the Switch 2, with fewer frame rate drops compared to the original Switch release. That said, the representative also cautioned that some complex player-created constructs—especially those built using the Autobuild system and stacked with weapons—might still test the limits of the hardware, even on Nintendo’s next-gen console.

Both upgraded editions will take advantage of the Switch 2’s custom Nvidia Tegra chip and DLSS upscaling capabilities, potentially allowing for higher performance without sacrificing battery life or visual fidelity.

The upgrade packs for Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom will be sold separately for $9.99 each. However, players subscribed to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack will receive both upgrades at no extra charge.

With these enhanced versions, Nintendo aims to provide a more stable and visually stunning experience for newcomers and veterans alike—just in time for the Switch 2’s launch window.
