In another shake-up within its gaming division, Warner Bros. Games has reportedly pulled the plug on a previously unannounced Hogwarts Legacy expansion that was expected to release in late 2025. The decision is believed to be part of a wider internal restructuring effort affecting multiple studios under the company’s umbrella.
Following the overwhelming success of Hogwarts Legacy in 2023, Warner Bros. Games had expressed growing interest in expanding the Wizarding World video game franchise. However, enthusiasm dwindled after a string of lackluster releases in 2024, including Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, and MultiVersus. These commercial failures appear to have triggered a series of financial cutbacks and cancellations, with the Hogwarts Legacy DLC becoming the latest casualty.
Expansion Deemed “Not Substantial Enough”
According to a recent Bloomberg report, the DLC’s development was shelved in early March 2025 after Warner Bros. leadership concluded it wasn’t “substantial enough” to justify the pricing strategy under consideration. The content was being developed in collaboration with Rocksteady Studios and would have included storylines featuring previously cut content—most notably one centered on a fan-favorite companion from the original game.
Plans for a “Definitive Edition” of Hogwarts Legacy, which would have bundled the base game with the canceled DLC, were also scrapped. The move was described as part of “ongoing restructuring” at Avalanche Software, the primary studio behind the franchise.
More Cancellations and Studio Closures
This isn’t the first major cancellation by Warner Bros. Games in recent months. In February 2025, the publisher axed the highly anticipated Wonder Woman game and closed down three studios, including Monolith Productions, best known for Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor. Rocksteady Studios also faced significant layoffs following the commercial failure of its Suicide Squad title.
Reports suggest that these cutbacks are part of broader cost-cutting measures extending to the highest levels of the company. Warner Bros. Discovery is rumored to be negotiating the departure of Games Division President David Haddad, who may step down later this year.
Sequel Still in the Works
While the cancellation of the DLC is undoubtedly disappointing for fans, there’s still hope for the future of the Wizarding World franchise. According to the same Bloomberg report, a full-fledged Hogwarts Legacy sequel is already in active development at Avalanche Software. Warner Bros. has previously stated that the franchise remains a key pillar in its future gaming roadmap.
Despite the turbulence, the magic may not be fading just yet.
