Counter-Strike 1.6 Standalone Remake Announced for Steam in 2025

A dedicated team of former CSPromod developers has officially announced CS: Legacy, a standalone remake of Counter-Strike 1.6, set to launch on Steam in 2025. Built using Valve’s Source Engine, the project aims to recreate the iconic gameplay of Counter-Strike 1.6 while integrating modern enhancements.

The developers have stated that all assets and code have been created from scratch, ensuring that CS: Legacy is a completely independent project. The game will feature a rewritten renderer, updated shaders, and improved mechanics to provide a modern yet faithful experience.

A reveal trailer has already showcased classic maps, familiar weapon models, and sound effects, staying true to the original Counter-Strike 1.6 while benefiting from Source Engine improvements. Ragdoll animations, refined hitboxes, and enhanced lighting effects will be part of the remake.

To support development, the team has launched a Patreon campaign, allowing supporters to contribute and gain access to exclusive perks, including a private Discord channel and recognition in the game’s credits.

Possible Challenges from Valve

While CS: Legacy is planned for a Steam release, questions remain about whether Valve will allow the project to launch without interference. Similar fan projects, such as Black Mesa (a Half-Life remake), have received official approval, but others, like Classic Offensive, faced a last-minute block by Valve.

With Counter-Strike 2 now being the official focus of Valve, it remains to be seen whether they will challenge CS: Legacy or allow it to exist as an alternative for nostalgic players.

CS: Legacy is expected to launch on Steam in 2025. Fans of Counter-Strike 1.6 will be watching closely to see if this remake successfully brings back the classic experience without legal roadblocks.
