Sega Faces an 8% Revenue Decline Despite Strong Releases

Sega’s latest fiscal year results for 2024/25 indicate an 8% drop in year-on-year revenue. Despite launching several popular games and a blockbuster movie in 2024, the company has yet to fully regain its financial footing. While fans eagerly await new projects—including a Jet-Set Radio revival and other dormant IP resurrections—many are particularly hopeful for the upcoming unannounced Sonic and Persona games to drive Sega’s recovery.

A Year of Highs and Lows

Sega’s year has been a mix of major successes and financial setbacks. Titles such as Persona 3: Reload and Metaphor: ReFantazio have been met with critical acclaim, generating significant excitement for the company’s future. Additionally, Sega’s ambitious Super Game project, slated for 2026, could further expand the company’s reach. However, despite these high points, Sega has had to contend with notable financial losses.

According to Sega Sammy’s Q3 2024/25 fiscal year results, reported by GamesIndustry.biz, the company’s net sales reached $2.1 billion as of December 31, 2024. This resulted in an operating income of $287.9 million, marking a 20.8% year-on-year decline, while ordinary income fell by 13.9% to $325.4 million.

Key Contributors to Sega’s Financial Losses

One major factor behind Sega’s revenue decline was the sale of Humankind developer Amplitude Studios. Sega Sammy recorded a $40 million loss following Amplitude’s shift back to an independent company. Additionally, the cancellation of Football Manager 2025 further impacted the company’s bottom line. Sega attributed the cancellation to the game failing to meet its internal quality standards, citing it as a “loss associated with a write-down of inventory assets.”

Optimism for the Future

Despite these setbacks, Sega’s entertainment division remains a strong performer, with an 88% increase in profit. The highly anticipated Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie has been a major win, grossing $460 million worldwide. With excitement building around a possible Persona 6 reveal, Sega still has strong opportunities ahead. If the next entries in the Sonic and Persona franchises perform as well as their predecessors, Sega could be well on its way to regaining its lost revenue and reinforcing its position in the gaming industry.
