EA Ends Support for Need for Speed Unbound as Criterion Shifts Focus to Battlefield

EA has confirmed that Need for Speed Unbound will no longer receive new content, just over two years after its December 2022 launch. UK-based developer Criterion Games, best known for the Burnout series, is now shifting its focus entirely to the next Battlefield installment.

Need for Speed Unbound Reaches Its Final Update

IGN confirmed with EA that the latest update for Need for Speed Unbound marks the end of the game’s content cycle. While the title will remain available for purchase, no further expansions or major updates are planned. This decision comes as Criterion’s Need for Speed team officially joins the rest of the studio in working on Battlefield.

Vince Zampella, Head of Respawn & Group GM for EA Studios, addressed the transition in a statement sent to IGN:

“The Need for Speed team at Criterion are joining their colleagues working on Battlefield. As a company, it was important to us to take the last year to listen to our Need for Speed community and use their feedback to create content for Unbound. With an increased understanding of what our players want in a Need for Speed experience, we plan to bring the franchise back in new and interesting ways.”

What’s Next for Need for Speed?

While EA’s statement suggests the Need for Speed series will return, there are no concrete details on when or in what form. The news has left many fans disappointed, as Unbound—though divisive—had an active player base eagerly awaiting future updates.

Players are now hoping EA will acknowledge the long-standing demand for a proper remaster of Need for Speed Underground 2, one of the most beloved racing games of all time. Whether EA decides to revive classic titles or move forward with a fresh take on the franchise remains to be seen.

For now, Need for Speed Unbound has reached the finish line, leaving fans wondering what’s next for the legendary racing series.
